Parsonii Rehabilitation

I agree give it a few months, it takes chameleons forever to get better, they do everything slowly especially heal. I had a veiled with calcium deficiency that wasn't considered MBD yet and a Vitamin A deficiency she took 4 months to get back to normal where I could adopt her out. My Jackson who has severe MBD took 6 months about. It takes forever >.< don't give up on her yet <3 She's showing great strides.

I would never give up on her. I worked in a quarantine center where all I did was rehabilitate and acclimate reptiles...mainly chameleons. Trust me, she will not get less than what she needs to make it if she can. But, after doing this for 17 years, I know when a chameleon is rebounding and when I am basically just bringing them back from the brink everyday. Letting them suffer is just as cruel as not caring for them properly. That is all I meant by that.

I am hoping she will make it. I know there has to be terrible renal damage already done. Just keep your fingers crossed!!

Thanks Tabitha. It is hard to see such a magnificent species in this rough of shape.
Such a crying shame to see this! I received a "special order" cham that was supposed to be a verrucosus through a decent shop once, and what sat miserably in its paper bag was a mummified Oustaleti. Bone thin, light as paper, dessicated and dull brown. I was horrified and so were the shop staff. Took it to a supposedly good vet who convinced me it needed Panacur immediately (this was a long long time ago...we know better these days), and the poor thing lived one more day despite constant care. The only good thing that came out of it all was that the shop "fired" that wholesaler for good. We all felt sick over it.

Omg that's horrible Carlton. D8 I feel so bad for what these creatures go through during the wild caught trade. I wish we had the means to breed them in captivity without ever having to go through the wild. Though I know it's necessary to refresh the bloodlines. If only we could somehow convince the people who run to take care of these beautiful creatures better.

Hey Tabitha!

She is hanging in there. She looks much better in the face. She is still going through crashes, so not even close to seeing the true picture yet. I am about to leave to go out of town for the evening. I will get you some pictures when I get back.

Hey guys. Sorry I have been off this thread for over a month. I couldn't really give an update because her health fluctuated so much that I would have been lying to say she was doing better or worse. It has been quite a battle getting her stabilized. We have spent quite a bit of time with my vet monitoring her health. She is not nearly out of the woods yet.

We have been battling with renal issues constantly. My vet has been pretty shocked that I have been able to get meat on her bones and get her looking better. But that means nothing in regards to her internal health. That in itself is a great lesson for novice keepers. When working with imports or rehabilitation projects such as this, external appearance does give a picture of condition, but it is not the whole story by any means. Always keep that in mind.

Here are some pics of her. They are not great and for that I apologize. But she endures SOOOOOOOO much stress when we are at the vet that when I get her home, I literally leave her alone. I try my best to not even give her a visual of me other than when I feed. So she stays tucked up in her ficus the majority of the time.

She just had more testing done last week to which I am waiting on the results. I will try to keep everyone posted as I know you have all been rooting for her.

Are there any members here who have dealt with renal issues in parsonii lately? Just curious on the route you may have taken in regards to treatment.

She might not be out of the woods Joel, but she is looking a lot better that's for sure. If she is to make I know you will give the one to give her every chance.

Regardless if her life span is shortened because of the previous issues, you clearly lengthened her lifespan in captivity in the most positive of ways a cham keeper could ever hope to sir. You have accomplished that which I would estimate less than 5% of the keepers on this forum could ever do - You took a Parson's from death's clutch and told death to go F*** himself for awhile. Well done fellow Parson keeper.

Couldn't put it better than the above!
Seeing her bought tears to my eyes and a surge of joy to my heart, she's unbelievable, I know she has some way to go but omg what a difference. Joel you are a magician, you've done amazing work. She's a lucky girl to have your level of care and knowledge. Best of luck with her for the future. ❤️

I agree she physically on the outside looks sooooo much better, she's nice and plump, no longer looks dehydrated or skeletal at all. Hopefully her renal issues will get better a bit. You are doing amazing work Joel and should be proud of both yourself and her.

AGREED! What a completely incredible transformation! No longer dehydrated, dull in color, or looking like Skeletor. Looks like a whole other chameleon..... WOW! You are one awesome chameleon keeper!
