the abcess will be treated with Amikacin injections. does anybody know anything about "Amikacin"?

his abcess in infected with pseudomonas. for some reason i feel that last time he was treated for pseudomonas it never cleared up all the way.

Kizzy is getting amikacin as well. It is important that they get lots of water to prevent kidney damage. Pokey may take to force fed water to hydrate him, but I finally had to go with subcutaneous injections of saline over her kidney area. Check with your vet to see how many cc or ml he will need.

With your busy schedule I wouldn't rely on him drinking on his own, unless you have an automatic misting system throughout the day and even then there is no garantee he will be drinking if he is feeling crummy.

Laura isn't that the same thing, pseudomonas., that Annie has?? Maybe cross contamination? That could be why it never cleared up.

i hardly think it was cross contanimation. they both had it from day 1 of me getting them and they were never in the sort of contact for coss contamination.

last time poke was treated for it he only got 3 shots. this time he's getting 4, and i think i will ask for another culture/sens. after the treatment to be sure this time. i really don't think his ever cleared up.

he does have an automatic misting system it comes on 4 times a day for 6 minutes each (i had it set for 10 minutes but once we splices it into the water lines in our house 10 minutes was WAY too much water, it ended up dumping out enough to fill a 3 gallon bucket in just one day). he wakes up(lights on) at 8am first shower is at 10, then, 12, 2, and 4, then from 4-8 his cage has time to dry for sleepy sleepy time again.

However, i will be watching his urate very closely for any orange. :)

That is a lot of water for one animal in a single cage. How dry does the cage get between the mistings? You want to make sure his cage and branches aren't consistently moist.

it dries completely. he has great air circulation in his room (and in his cage) and he has a mega ray buld. And he only has one large "umbrella" plant in his cage.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative, aerobic rod opportunistic pathogen that almost never infects uncompromised tissues.

Its commonly found in soil and water and can occur on plant surfaces too and is quite often found in the normal flora of humans. Its one of the bacteria that often shows up when humans have burns, BTW. Its also common in urinary tract infections and respiratory infections.

Its notorious for its resistance to antibiotics.

Pokey's lip looks all better now. he has gotten 2 shots so far. tomorrow will be #3. His eating/drinking never slowed down. His lip never seemed to bother him which makes me very happy. He's taking the shots very well too, not trying to bit or anything :D

just to finish this thread off. Pokey made a full recovery. his lip is fine, he's still eating and drinking fine. and his urate never turned orange.

and he lived happily ever after....
