Possible Respiratory Infection

Well I have had my chameleon 'Waldo' since 9:00 this morning. I have heard him open his mouth and make a popping sound, and also saw him blow a spit bubble. This leads me to believe that he may have a respiratory infection. Is there anything I can do prior to taking him to the vet? I will be taking him as soon as possible but I want to get started on whatever I can to get him better. Attached is a photo of what appears to be an enlarged throat.

Drip-water him only, bump the heat up just a tiny bit, especially since he's a youngin. Don't use an auto mister or over saturate his cage. Back off of the Supplements.

I've recently gone through this and received this advice from one of the Site Vendors and it helped immensely. It was also suggested to remove as much man made environment from the equation as possible, but my chameleon was a Panther and a lot older. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear your little guy is not well. My first suggestion which you may already know is vet ASAP. At this age, they are quickly overcome, and respiratory infections can be nasty. Frogg had one at between 3 and 4 months of age, approx 3 weeks after I got him. My other suggestions are to increase the basking temp a couple degrees, don't be overzealous with the little guys. More isn't always better. Increasing their body temp should help fight infection. I kept my basking temp up for almost a week into the antibiotic regimen also. Next would be to increase the humidity. I ran a vaporizer, which helped overall increase the temp in my enclosure. I kept the humidity between 60 and 65 percent. I also kept this up for almost a week. Frogg would sit in the mist and sometimes even sleep there. I ended up with 2 rounds of different antibiotics to clear it up. Hopefully yours is cleared up easily. Good luck.

I forgot to add. When you get to the Vet. inquire about Fortaz. It truly is a wonder drug. I've used it now on two different Chams and it's worked on both. I also like the fact that it caused not skin damage like a lot of the other medications on the market have a tendency to do. Fortaz requires an injection and therefore you'll need help if you decide to take it on yourself. Good luck with the lil feller.

Sounds like he's got one in my opinion. My first female Rudis had one last year. Constantly puffing, inhaling, exhaling, making that popping/cracking noise and sometimes basking with her eyes closed and mouth opened for long periods of time.
I remember talking to Mike Monge over the phone about this and he said I needed something called Baytril or something..so yeah. Hope the young guy gets better, all the best, Anil:)

I second the Fortaz. Works great. Double and triple check the dose with the vet while at the office. They should show you where on the syringe the correct dosage is. Very important!!!

Hey Jake,

Personally I would contact the breeder and get a refund or new animal. You should contact them ASAP and let them know of the problem. They should be more than happy to work the situation out. I hope everything goes well for you and your cham.

I don't wish to get a new cham, I'm liking this guy alot. Maybe we could work out a partial refund or something. I have already contacted her about the problem, and maybe she could just pay for the vet visit or something.

Also, who would you recommend me see as a vet around here in los angeles?

hope someone may be able to help because i think im on the same subject. My female veiled is 3 months old. She sits at her basking spot all the time and keeps opening her mouth. she doesnt keep it open, she just does it repeatedly. She doesnt really have any other symptoms, shes eating fine and has good coordination. she just keeps opening her mouth. i know that they do this to cool down but she does it way too much. Any ideas?? thank yall for any help.

Have you checked the temps? She probably is too hot. Babies can't thermoregulate as well as adults, therefore they need to be kept slightly cooler.
