Quick question on plants

So I just got my umbrella tree for my cage and just had a couple quick questions.

First I sprayed the entire thing down with some Dawn anti-bacterial soap mixed with warm water, let it sit, then rinsed the entire thing down...is that good enough in terms of cleaning?

Also I'm going to re-pot the plant and while I'm going to put landscaping rocks on top of the soil I saw in another thread that it's still a good idea to use organic soil, but I don't know exactly where to find this/what to look for?

Would this work?

Yes on the soil, i think i have the same stuff. ORganic and no fertilizer is whats important

cool thanks! just want to make sure I'm 100% getting the correct stuff and not doing something dumb I don't realize I'm doing and hurt my chameleon when he gets here

:D

So I washed and rinsed the plant and was checking it out today and noticed it has some stuff almost dust on the leaves. Is that normal or should I give it another wash?

Lol sorry I'm just paranoid, this will be my first chameleon!

Those marks are just from the water, you must live in a hard water area like me. There's no problem, but if you don't like how it looks you could use purified water to clean the leaves. What kind of Cham are you getting?

Yes on the dust looking stuff that's just dried up minerals from your water just so you know lowes has some organic soil for like $2

Ok great thanks! I know I'm asking a ton I crazy questions I'm just really paranoid lol

Im getting a male ambilobe from Bruce at chameleon paradise (one of candy canes offspring)

Thats weird I was just at lowes yesterday and the lady told me they didn't carry any organic soil. Any brand youd recommend?

You think you're paranoid now, just you wait till you get him home :) I'm sure you'll do great, it's the people who don't worry or ask crazy questions that have it wrong!

Imo it is best to Triple rinse the plants, if they were sprayed with pesticides you dont want to take any chances. :) and get used to the paranoia, once you get your cham it'll happen even more:p

another way to go is eco earth soil. it is clean, no pesticides, but not "organic". organic soil might give you problems down the road with gnats and slugs. both of which myself and several others have had to deal with.
after repotting with the soil, put clean sand on top, then the flat rocks. I must say though all of mine have at one time or another pushed the river rocks around and munched on a mouthful of the sand :p.
No ill affects have I ever seen because of this

ya I was reading about this stuff in the other thread, I'm definitely going to go this route. Just seems easier to me. Thanks!

Candy man or whatever is a BEAUTIFUL chameleon! He makes your jaw drop to the floor when you see him in real life.

As long as it has no added chemicals its fine.

I used to get a lot of mineral deposits on my plants, now I filter all my water through a water purifier. Yea I am also paranoid! Whats your cage look like so far? Remember no waterfall, must use a dripper! And keep the distance of the basking light your cham may burn it self!

I'm currently waiting on the cage and the stuff to get here so I can set it all up. I will most definitely be posting pics of it so you guys can help me tweak everything :)

and no worries no waterfall! right now I went with the 18x18x30 cage from LLL got the reptisun 5.0 uvb, and picked up a 40w and 60w basking bulb (figured I'd try em both out) and for now I just got a misting bottle, but i'm thinking about making a dripper.

I got some flukers bending vine, along with the umbrella plant, some sticks, and then some fake plastic leaves I figured I'd tie up around the cage to give some extra cover and whatnot.

I still gotta order some cricket gutload, I was thinking of getting bug burger since it seems easy but would that be all I would need to use for cricket gutloading?

Gut loading and feeding your cham vitamins is vital! There is a real good site to order your vitamins........

http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog...d-cage-cleaners/reptile-calcium-and-vitamins/

Get the Rep Cal Calcium WITHOUT D3 and RepCal ultra fine calcium with D3 and RepCal Herptivite supplement.

Cal- D3 is every day.......Cal+D3 is 2x's a month......Multi Vitamin is once a month.

Light dusting on your food. DO NOT milk the food with this stuff! MOre infos available on the fourm. This is a quick taste of what I got and use!

Yep already ordered the RepCal Calcium w/o D3, Herptivite, and am getting some Calcium w/D3 from Bruce.

When you say dust the food you mean dust the crickets before I feed them to the chameleon correct? I know you're supposed to gutload the crickets the night before you feed them to the cham.

Yes in addition to gut loading the crickets..... every day. To much or to little can be harmful to your chams life.

Ok sorry I was a little confused didn't know if you meant to sprinkle the supplements in the cricket cage for them to eat or to dust the actual cricket before feeding him to the Cham. Thanks for clarifying :)

that website bruce has is VERY helpful with information!!!! I had to save a few pages in Word Doc files!! What are his prices like?
