Quick Question

I have Commah (4 month old Vield) set up in a tank with a combo UVA/UVB bulb, and a black night bulb (only used during winter months! i promise i know its not natural to have a light on during night time.)

I'm switching to a seperate UVA and UVB bulb fixtures because I got them free and want to try it out. I'm getting the UVB Retisun 5.0 bulb and a 100 Watt Basking bulb.

Is this going to be ok?! I've never used seperate UVA/UVB fixtures... Is their a difference between using the combo bulb and this way?

Do I need to put them close together? Or is it OK for them to be on different sides of the enclosure?! He only basks in one spot- I know to have the basking bulb above this spot... but is it ok to have the UVB bulb away from that spot?

Maybe i'm just being over obsessive?

Thanks all.

The 2 separate lights like what you have know sounds fine to me and is what I use. What do you mean combo bulb? is it uvb/uva and heat like a power sun? Repti suns have uva/uvb in one light as well. For placement try to put the repti sun where your chameleon can get different intensities of uvb/uva so your basking bulb over his basking spot and the repti sun near by or some place he will get ample absorption. Hope this helps.

Nate

Yep, this is what most will use. A separate basking spot (or two, like I have) is great. If you are using the one, make sure the basking area is angled to provide a varied temperature range. (IE. a vine slanted) 100 watt may be too hot so be careful with the temp. You may need to move the light away a little to prevent burns, or just use a lesser wattage bulb.

For UVB/a all you will need is the reptisun 5.0 - they are only effective to 12" so make sure your cham has a perch that is within that distance (I have a perch on all my cages that runs parallel to the bulb, 6" away). The bulb you use for heat should be on one side of the cage so your cham can move in and out of the heat. Temperature under the light should be around 95. I think your 100 watt bulb is going to be WAY to strong. I see you mentioned "tank" in your post - if you have him in an aquarium the heat build up will be quite a bit. I suspect a 50 watt or smaller bulb would get you to your basking temp. Ventilation is a big key in being successful with chams which is why most people are using screened enclosures rather than aquariums so keep that in mind if you're using an aquarium. Also, these animals do need to cool down at night so don't use a heat lamp at night. Best of luck and enjoy!
