Re-Screening Cage- PVC Mesh

Ah, the joys of living in Hawaii. Free chameleons... no decent supplies to DIY with.

The PVC coated mesh is unavailable, unless I want to trade an arm and a leg to get it shipped here, but the PVC only mesh is currently available in stock (for less than half the price). Since there is no way I'm getting PVC coated 1/4" and I have to go with 1/2", I wont be free feeding crickets anyways. I know the downside to PVC only mesh is that crickets can and will chew through it. Since they wont be out and about, should I just go ahead and re-screen with the PVC only 1/2"? Currently I have dark window screen and galvanized hardware cloth (it was a super last minute situation), both of which I want gone ASAP, which is another benefit to going with the PVC mesh, that I can get it taken care of right away.

Why are you wanting the screen gone?

It's a dark fiberglass windowscreen that is very visible and unattractive, and the top is galvanized mesh. Since it's an outdoor cage that's a lot of possible heavy metal getting into his system, and the PVC mesh is only available in 15ft rolls, so I figured I'd just replace all of it while I'm at it.

Sounds like Alaska....except that we don't even have free chams in the bushes! Another option for pvc coated mesh is to paint the galvanized mesh with tool handle coating. Even a heavy sealing spray paint would coat all those sharp galvanized edges.

I thought about doing this, but I'd have no where to keep my cham while I got everything safely coated and dried, and for the price the PVC is sort of worth it. I'm probably going to go down to Home Depot tomorrow afternoon since I'll already be in the area and pick some up.

Gotcha! Well, you're right. If you are going to do it, it is better to do it all at once. Let us know how it turns out.
