At the last SBCK meeting (09-27-09, held at Elisa's house) Dave weldon presented a lecture on UV lighting. One of the topics was about the damaging UVC and high levels of UVB that is put out by a CFL. We also talk about determining the old phosphor mixture from the new. The phosphor is what determines the type of light coming from the lamp.
The only way you can tell that you are looking at a new lamp vs. and old lamp, without testing the lamp.... is by looking at the little hand out inside of the box. There is a date in the lower right hand corner.
I must apologize... these pics are from my iPhone.... and the quality sucks at close range.
This is what you will see on a new instruction sheet. The date is "03-09" (March 2009) in the lower right corner of that black rectangle.
This is what you will see on the old instruction sheet. The date on this sheet will be "12-06" (December 2006).
Now, the entire instruction sheet is also changes slightly....

You can see the pictures are moved around. I do not know if the text is much different as I did not read the sheet.
The packaging is the same and so are the lamps. So just looking at them won't tell you much. You have to look at the sheet inside of the box. There was one thing I could tell visibly but who knows if this has anything to do with it.. the old version of CFL, the lamp looks more 'yellow'. You can kinda see it in the photo. Oh and it looks like they didn't reload the ink on the logo stamp for the lamp... it's faded or less ink on the new lamp (on the left)
The front package on display was the 'new' lamp and the second package was the old. So obviously this Petsmart doesn't know how to stock items...... oldest up front. It is a good thing though, the next person silly enough to spend $35 on a CFL will at least get the 'good one'.
Oh.... and a KILLER deal........
