Repti-Sun CFL: Old vs. New

At the last SBCK meeting (09-27-09, held at Elisa's house) Dave weldon presented a lecture on UV lighting. One of the topics was about the damaging UVC and high levels of UVB that is put out by a CFL. We also talk about determining the old phosphor mixture from the new. The phosphor is what determines the type of light coming from the lamp.

The only way you can tell that you are looking at a new lamp vs. and old lamp, without testing the lamp.... is by looking at the little hand out inside of the box. There is a date in the lower right hand corner.

I must apologize... these pics are from my iPhone.... and the quality sucks at close range.

This is what you will see on a new instruction sheet. The date is "03-09" (March 2009) in the lower right corner of that black rectangle.

This is what you will see on the old instruction sheet. The date on this sheet will be "12-06" (December 2006).

Now, the entire instruction sheet is also changes slightly....

Old:

You can see the pictures are moved around. I do not know if the text is much different as I did not read the sheet.

The packaging is the same and so are the lamps. So just looking at them won't tell you much. You have to look at the sheet inside of the box. There was one thing I could tell visibly but who knows if this has anything to do with it.. the old version of CFL, the lamp looks more 'yellow'. You can kinda see it in the photo. Oh and it looks like they didn't reload the ink on the logo stamp for the lamp... it's faded or less ink on the new lamp (on the left)

The front package on display was the 'new' lamp and the second package was the old. So obviously this Petsmart doesn't know how to stock items...... oldest up front. It is a good thing though, the next person silly enough to spend $35 on a CFL will at least get the 'good one'.

Oh.... and a KILLER deal........

Thanks for the tidbit of information Kev. Although I still have to agree with an article recently written about these new bulbs. I don't have it to link to but it's in one of the many informative threads on these bulbs. Note I said informative. Not "what bulb should I use" threads.

The doctor who wrote the article makes and argument that even though these new bulbs are "safe" they still only produce a low "safe" level of UVB in a centralized location. The problem with this is, for this UVB level to be "safe" the chams need more contact with it than what they get from this 5-10 in diameter spot of localized UVB. Meaning that in order to provide the chams with long term benefits of UVB exposure a linear tube is still really the only way to go, since it puts out the safe levels of UVB over pretty much the whole top 12 inches of the cage. This allows for the cham to have almost constant exposure to a low safe level of UVB.

If anyone knows of what article I'm referring to, could you please link it. I would like to save it for my records.

Howdy,

It might have been one of the links in several of my posts within this thread: https://www.chameleonforums.com/updated-info-cf-uvb-29318/

Oh, and just to make sure I don't get "strung-up" by someone, the dangerous UVB sources produce unhealthy, non-terrestrial wavelengths below the good region of UVB but not necessarily all the way into the official UVC region .

Thanks Dave! I thought it may have been one of your posts but wasn't sure. This is the link I'm talking about and below is the direct quote we should all pay attention to.

The reason I find compact lamps with "safer" spectra difficult to use in vivaria
is because they are not ideal for either "shade" or "patch of sunlight" methods.
They produce a small zone of light with a steep UVB gradient - so unless you are
illuminating a very small reptile in a very small vivarium, they do not provide
a big enough zone for the "shade" method.
But the output is nowhere near high enough to create a "patch of sunlight" even
if placed right next to the basking lamp. You are very unlikely to be able to
produce a decent-sized basking zone with UV Index 3.0 or 4.0, for example, under
a compact lamp with a safer spectrum.

some updates.

An easy way to identify the new CFL 10.0 is this print on the top of the box...

and these ads on the side...

So far any box I have opened with this labeling.... or new box has had the updated instructions and I would hope is the new lamp with the new phosphor mixture.

Zoo Med has also made a new combo with the 5.0.... It is a total rip off and way too hot heat lamp for cham use......... but still a good marketing trick..

Aren't these bulbs used more for desert creatures? I know they aren't good for chams. I had to learn the hard way, but I do know the dragons, etc. require different lighting.

If used correctly, they can be used with chameleons just fine. Should people buy this lamp over the linear tube? I wouldn't unless you needed the CFL style lamp.... for instance; you can't afford another lamp AND new fixture to convert to a linear tube... or if you were limited on space...

There are a couple of examples.

I scanned the hand outs from zoo med that are found in the boxes of the new and old lamps.

Pictures of the box that the new CF lamps come in. Both the 10.0 and 5.0 look like this, they just have different numbers on them to identify '5.0' and '10.0'.

The easiest way to tell an old box from the new is the top of the box.

Man, look at you. Getting all the fancy stuff out to take pictures of a box! I find it so freeking funny that places like PetCo charge $40 for those things, they probably get them for $10, that’s one heck of a mark up!

lol not even fancy... just paper and somthing to bounce the flash off ot :D

yeah I think I saw somewhere that the lamps are about $3 from china (zoo med's cost) and then they prolly sell it to petco for about $10-15 a unit..... maybe less I dunno... either way they are not cheap.... to the general customer....

I took better pics....

the 'old' style box is on the left in the following photos.

The fastest way to determine the old from new is the lid of the box.

Remember though, you need to check the hand out in the box to make sure the date on it is correct. You want to see "01-09" on the bottom right corner of the hand out. That is the new data sheet for the new lamp. Be sure to follow the instructions closely if you decide to use CFL lamps.

You really have to check...

I just bought Reptisun 5.0 in the new box, but when I opened it, it contained the old instructions. Has anyone else had this happen?

Just this past week on a bit of a experiment I went into about 4 petsores and opened the boxes of ALL the CFL's on the shelves and I only found one that was correct and definatley of the newer version... I was stunned about how much of the old crap it still out there in circulation!

Howdy Eric,

Just when we thought we had this "old vs. new" situation under control, I had a chat with one of the ZooMed people about these CFLs, only to find out that they recently used-up a bunch of the old instruction sheets in new boxes :(. Not a wise move on their part :(. I guess they didn't understand the ramifications of this move since this was part of the way the public could identify the difference between the two. The do now. I don't know for sure if they changed back to the proper instructions sheets again.

WOW that is amazing....

'We have been installing stop signs at intersection instead of yield signs because we realized yield signs on all four corners wasn't safe. But since we have all of these yield signs laying around, lets start using them up again.............................................. '

Anyone heard of a recycle bin? At work we have corrugated compactor machines. We get about $1200 a month from the people who come and pick up the dumpsters.

Around friends, when someone makes a bone headed move we say 'DURRRRRRRRR!!'

I kind of suspected as much, but was concerned about the possibility that an extra lamp or two could just as easily made it into a "new" box as well.

I plugged it in and read reasonable UVB radiance numbers from my 6.2, but I don't have a meter for UVC or other unhealthful wavelengths.

As always, thank you for the info. I can now safely continue my quest for the optimal heating and lighting arrangement.

Can someone go back to the beginning to explain why you are talking about old vs new? And, which one is better?

Thanks.
