"PURCHASED" a cham today.....

Or at least thats what i consider it.
I went to a local pet store for some crix a couple days ago, and i saw something kinda sad. A large adult male vield all browned out sitting still on a small log on the floor of a tiney 16"X16"X20" cage. I could tell he wasnt taken care of very well by the big bowl of water next to him and no dripper, mister, or u.v. Lighting. Just a basking light a fogger :rolleyes:and some crickets. I told the employee (whom i knew kinda well from frequenting the store for crickets) all about better cham care(misting, a dripper, vitamin dusting...yada yada yada) and asked if the owner was going to be in that day. She said no she won't but she will on monday. She let me examine him for health issues and he seemed fine. Just gaped at me for a sec but then calmed down and was sitting still on my hand all brown and stressed. Then she told me how they came upon this guy. A couple kids found him in the middle of the street and brought him in and gave it to them.

So all weekend im worried about this thing. I had not planned on getting another cham. Im perfectly sattisfied with the ones i have. But the fact that they were trying to sell it for a lot "with settup" (if u can call it that) made me worried some idiot was gonna buy it and it was just going to be a misserable experience for the both of them. So i went in there today with the goal of either talking them into putting the cham in a better settup and including a book about them with it. Or just letting me take it home.
When i arrived i started handling him again and convinced the lady to at least give him a dripper and she starts setting it up and says i should buy it cuz they normally cost a lot by themselves without a cage. I told her "yeah a panther or a rare species...... But not a vield with no prior knowledge of its health or care." I told her "this thing could be wild caught or full of parasites or any other countless problems." And i dont need that settup he is better off living on my pothos plant at home. She asked if i was gonna get him or not cuz she was gonna set up the dripper.
After a call to the owner she let me walk out with him and some more crickets at a gernerous discount. So im gonna quarantine him for a while... See how he is... And my fiance and i will decide wether or not we should keep him or adopt him out. For now he is on my pothos with a heat bulb and uv fixture aimed at him from the adjacent book shelf and we are misting him manually. Tomaro we decide on either turning it into a free range in our living room or building a new cage.
Ill take better pics tomaro as well.

He actually looks pretty good. Some showers, good food and lighting should make him happy. I bet you keep him. :)

A couple of kids found him in the street?

This is someone's escaped (or stolen) et and judging by the general appearance was well taken care of at some point.

I would consider a "Found" ad which most papers do for free. Make it vague so some idiot doesn't call in for a free animal (They will for sure). Just say "Found Chameleon call / e-mail for specifics" Make them tell you what it is and approximate age, volunteer nothing. A Veiled is inexpensive but could have sentimental value to someone.

I can imagine some kids stealing it thinking it is worth money (Because chameleons are expensive right?) and when they discovered they probably couldn't trade an unknown condition veiled for a case of beer they gave it to the pet shop.

In my opinion that is the right thing to do. And if someone claims it ask them to pay what you paid the pet store and let them visit the pet store to get the money back. (With you preferably) This is what the store should have done to begin with. Why would you take a possibly hot animal then turn around and try to sell it? That is shady.

I would post an ad also on Craigslist or something where they have lost and found or maybe on the grocery store board. I would want someone to do that for me If I lost one of my chams. Anyways, he does look good and if it turns out no one claims him then I am glad you took him cause he probably would have ended up dead after the pet store got done telling the new owner how to care for him!!! Either way if you keep him or find a home, atleast he will be well taken care of by you or you can teach the new owner proper care. I am all for "rescuing" animals from the pet stores. Alot of people on here aren't cause they say it just promotes the store to keep restocking and selling. I disagree and I am glad there are people out there like you. JMO

I would suggest you look for an owner as well, but I would like to say that (if "orange" means orange county in CA) Someone could have released the animal. I can't remember if there are wild veiled populations down there or not though. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

If you pay for it, I don't consider it a rescue. It is a purchase.

There arent any wild ones that i know of in orange so i figured it must have been an escaped pet. And yes he is in pretty good condition. good body wieght no skars no signs of illness. which makes me think somebody was taking good care of him recently. Which made me think well he is healthy so will be fine. i dont need to get him outta there, but then i thaught........ with them taking care of it. It wont stay healthy much longer.

As far as craigslist goes that will be my last resort. Craigslist in o.c. Is nothing but idiots flakes and scammers for the most part. My fiance told me just yesturday that Right now there is a person who has some iguanas posted for trade for other reptiles....... The exact same person posts ads frequently claiming to be a reptile and bird rescuer and will provide a final forever home for unwanted exotic pets, and even posted an update ad when he/she "rescued" these iguanas saying how good they are and he/she will keep them forever. So i guess he/she thinks "trading" them is ok as long as he is not "selling" them??????

But I can put up some found exotic pet lizard posters in the area. The lady told me the intersection where the kids found it. I could also put an ad in the paper. But every time we find a dog or cat or bird and list it on craigslist we get idiots liars and a few genuine people looking for thier lost pet but they lost it months or even years ago on the other side of the county and it turns out the pet isnt theirs. So we end up taking it to the shelter anyway. But i hate taking anything that isnt a cat or dog to the shelter cuz they are even worse than any pet shop.

even if u get an animal from a shelter or rescue u still "pay" something so i guess every ones rescues are all purchases:rolleyes:

It's a purchase. The difference with a shelter, is that they don't breed the animals or try to make a profit off of them. The money you 'pay' to a shelter goes back into feeding the animal, spay/neuter fees, and vet bills. When you purchase an animal from a pet store, they are selling it for profit.

there ya go that makes more sense.;)

so far iv printed up a few fliers and posted a couple found ads online. going to the actual area to post more fliers later. th.

I'm glad you're trying to find it's owner.

I agree. I think that really speaks well of your character.

Makes me happy there are people out there willing to do the right thing when they stand to gain nothing from it.

iv read post on this website about a wild population of vields in san diego. I think it gets too cold in san fran. Although there are some famous wild parrots of telegraph hill. They are awesome. I recomend everybody watch that documentary.
