Papaya beetles... REMEMBER, it's Papaya beetles.

For where we live adding heat isn't going to be required
you can do it if you want...
but honestly you would be better off saving your utility bill imo
if you keep a few chams in their own room heat isn't going to be a problem.
with all those light bulbs burning away it'll be warm enough.

I use egg crates and paper towel rolls
everything is DYI
I make my own dry chow
water is provided by fruit slices (Henry's weekly special)
and it all seems to be more than enough.
I haven't "cleaned" the tub in 8 months and have only bothered to remove
spoiled fruit and refill the dry food trays. they're that easy.

You've just gotta remember to tell the females that come over that they're
"Hawaiian papaya flower beetles" Thats very important.
and followup with "how valuable they are in the pollination of all the papaya flowers....
on the papaya plantations.... "

Do that, and she won't freak out and run off into the night screaming.
If you forget, you'll find yourself alone watching Conan O'brian that evening.

oh yeah, water crystals can also be used ...
but it's kinda another thing to get dirty & clean up
I'd rather feed them something juicy and full of sugar.

I can get you a few starter roaches at our next meet up.
hummmm how much beer are roaches worth nowdays?

Light cycle?

Does any one have any idea what type of light cycle they are meant to be on? I keep them in the garage and figure the light should not be off all day.
Never mind, I read that they thrive in the dark.

The majority of roaches are active at night and sleep during the day. A very small amount of ambient lighting is enough to proivide them a day - night cylcle. However, complete 24 hour darkness would be similar to providing a chameleon 24 hours of light.

Brandon, I'm glad to hear you've mad your decision to get them:)
Orin, thanks for the info. I think I'm going to put a lamp down their for them today!
I was going to see if anyone had some helpful feeding tips. How on earth do you get your chameleons interested in these things? I've tried letting them run in the cage, and getting my man to hand feed them...but no luck w the chams. Thus far only my beardie is eating them like candy.

Try a feeding cup/bowl of some sort. If you don't they'll just hide somewhere in the cage.
I use the tops from my CD/DVD spools as a bowl and drop them in.
They don't climb out and it's a good shooting distance from the edge.
the veilds don't have any a problem... but the panthers are "picky"
All of mine ate the lobster roaches but quickly turned off to them
the veilds also started to turn their noses up at that the lobster (ymmv)
But quickly forgot about all of that, when the "papaya flower beetles" came onto the menu. ;)

what do most people use for their roaches? just a large plastic container with a lid? (i know u have to modify it yada yada yada) just wondering if there is any difference between using a plastic container vs like a 20 gal aquarium?

example:
I love my "hawaiian papaya flower beetles"
Here julie, sara, kate, maria... you can even hold one if you like...
they don't bite or anything...

Yes, they love papaya.. I have to feed them some very month
or else they won't have any babies... aren't they cute?"
Did you know that they're really rare nowdays because of hawaiian deforestation?
They're very important in the papaya crops as they're sued to pollenate the papaya flowers naturally

JK hahahah :D

Ah... ok... :) Yes, I think I've seen you type that before now that I think about it!

Unfortunately that little trick wouldn't work. I've never known someone as afraid of bugs as my g/f. She freaks out when the crix get out! On the other hand, it sure makes playing practical jokes easy.

haha, I def call them Hawian Papaya Flower Beatles b/c it just makes me feel that much better about the situation if I just think about that. Thanks Jewl.

back to the subject

I prefer rubbermaid or sterilite tubs with screened ventilation windows cut into them.
Aquariums work fine but are heavy, breakable, and even the non-climbers can usually manage to climb up the corners on the silicone.
I stack and move things around a lot so lighter enclosures end up being much better for my back.:)

Go down to target or walmart and buy a cheap storage container
it should run you around 7 bucks
cut a few large holes in the lid to allow for air exchange
The males can only fly at a low angle of attack (they can't launch themselves straight up)
They'll stay in there as long as any launch site is below the air holes.
I personally cross stack the tubs until I can find the time to build that HPFB enclosure to hold all the tups properly.

also, I use the egg crates left over from the CostCo 5 dozen eggs in flats for 6 bucks
make yourself some omelettes and you'll be just fine.
(if you want I'll sell ya the starters cheap).
