Ruling Out Illness Possibilities for K.Multi...

I have an adult K.Multi called Slurp who has recently been to the vet as was not eating much and keeping his eyes closed sometimes during the day.

A fecal was done and the vet has found round worms. I was given Panacur to give him orally for 3 days in a row ..this ended last Wednesday. I have only seen minor changes in him such as keeping his eyes closed slightly less. He eats one locust and an occasional worm every 2/3 days and his pooping is very limited and also loose and undigested.

I have called the vet and left a message to call me back ...in the meantime, I have a few questions I would like clearing for as I am starting to think it might be something else...

I do not know exactly how old he is as I got him as an adult so I am curious to know the symptoms of old age?



..during the last couple of months his ambient temps went up to high 70`s and a basking of 85 ...the vet said that the symptoms he has are not related to the temps..?

Humidity ranges from 60 - 90 % and he is misted 3 times daily ..

I am just hoping that he might need another dose of Panacur but until I hear from the vet, I would appreciate any feedback.

Lights : Linear 5.0 Reptisun + Incandescent 40watt bulb ( 70F ambient / 85F Basking ) dripper on half the day ...low traffic area .. Thanks

If round worms are anywhere close to as hard to get rid of as coccidian (which I have experience treating) it might take several dosess (aka several weeks) to fully treat him.

the thing with panacur is that after 3-5 days of treatment you have to wait for another 3-5 days and then start a new 3-5 days cycle because it only kills the adult worms and not the worms' eggs.
you have to wait a few days for the eggs to develop and then use it again to kill the new adults before they reproduce again.
your vet will surey advise you in more detail on times and dosages
parasites are tough to get rid of but panacur usually works fine even though you don't see the results from one day to the other, you have to be patient to see the results!

Unfortunately patience is not my strongest point but I will make sure to put it to use..have not heard anything from the Vet yet. I just need to put my mind at rest that he still most probbably just needs another round oe Panacur.

So just a quick update ...the vet has not got back to me. I have tried contact him but to no avail..

I am not going to risk giving him anything without the vet`s advise ...if not the vet`s, someone experienced from CF...

Is it risky to give Slurp the same amount of Panacur again ? He was given 0.08 for 3 days from Mon to Wed of last week ...as mentioned before there were no changes in Slurp and he is still keeping his eyes closed for most of the day ..would there be any risks if I were to repeat dose?

I would call another vet but he is the only trusted one in Malta and would not be ready to take chances with any other Vet..

I'm no vet but I'd go for it, at the end of the day a small amount of panacur is not harmful for the cham as other drugs are. how many drops or cc's are you giving?
anyway, try to PM some of the forums' vets, they'll surely help you!

I am giving 0.08 on the syringe ...don`t know how many cc`s that is ...might be 0.08ml every dose (one a day for 3 days)

As said already, it is important to wait a week between dosing to ensure a full kill on parasites. Sometimes two treatments may not be enough though.

In addition to the treating, you should be thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting his cage so he is not contracting the round worm again.

I also recommend putting him in quarantine away from any other chams you have. And be sure to clean your hands when working between cages.

So the last dose I gave him was last Wed ...so if I understand correctly I give him again tomorrow ..

I worded that incorrectly, it should be dose, skip a week then dose again. So you will not administer again until next Wednesday.

I have also heard of dosing 5 days, skipping two weeks, then another five days on as a successful regimine.

In addition to the panacur, I personally also give Benebac between treatments to replenish good gut flora that may have been killed off in the process.

Just got a call from the vet ..he is going to administer Flagyl if that is the precise name..fingers and toes crossed! This i7 the first time i am going through this and i am feeling anxious :-/
