Sad News =(

So I noticed this morning that Calais has broken his tail somehow. It is snapped in half with the end all purple and gross :( He has a vet appointment today at 2:20, but she will probably have to amputate. I don't know how much that will cost, but I guess we will see.

That sucks, poor thing. My Daedalus needed a good chunk of his tail amputated and it cost me about $150. He wanted another $150 for a biopsy on the tail, but I told him not to bother, I didn't want to waste the money if I know the necrotic tail was caused by the break.

He's doing awesome, and he doesn't seem to miss it at all. But he holds it up now when he walks, holds it curved upwards, almost like a husky lol.

That's good to know. $150 is not a bad price at all and something like that I could manage. He probably holds it up for balance =D Cat's do that too when they need to balance well on something, and horses will lift and swish their tail when doing certain riding tasks to keep their balance.

That's probably why he does it, but it's funny. He looks a little chubbier due to the short tail but he does great.

I know it's sad that your beloved cham broke his tail in captivity, I think we forget that accidents happen to wild chams too. At least you can shorten his healing time and lessen his pain with vet treatment. On my trip to Madagascar I seem to remember a wild cham with some of its tail missing. The cham was healthy and active without a full tail, but I'm sure it had to re-learn climbing and hunting techniques pretty quickly!

Calais is back from the hospital and doing great. He is eating and drinking and walking around. Now to watch the incision to make sure it doesn't get infected.

Awesome! Did it cost you similarly to my amputation? You'll see, he'll live life as nothing ever happened. My vet was worried about Daedalus's quality of life but I told him not to worry, that this guy has all the plants and vines he could ever want to climb, he doesn't need his tail to hunt or anything (especially since I hand feed). And he's done just great.

Yeah my vet wasn't worried. It was $186 with the surgery/ exam/ and antibiotics. He did give them a scare when his body temp dropped after the surgery but they warmed him back up and he tried to bite them haha

Glad to hear he's doing good! I think they are cute with stubbed tails. My beloved Earl had a stubby tail and he just got to the point where he used it as a hook lol

Hope he has a quick and easy recovery

Kayla, Sorry to hear about Calais loosing the tip of his tail but so very glad that he's doing well from the surgery.

oh my goodness! Sorry to hear about your cham. Especially seeing he is one of my FAVORITE chams ever, I was even more bummed out to read your post but so glad things turned out well. I hope he continues to progress and will lead a happy and healthy life!

Captain Hook! You should give Earl an eyepatch. ;)

Thanks :) I am really glad he is doing well. I had him eat a roach when he got home to see how he was feeling and he took it readily. He is resting comfortably on his own little free range that is low to the ground so if he falls he won't get hurt. I'm sad that my handsome guy is now handicapped but at least he is happy, it must have been ouchy, and the vet said he looked very healthy otherwise.
