Sad Sad News From The Vet Yesterday

So so sorry to hear about Red.

This story hits home. I found a lump on my dog a couple months ago and had it tested. Turned out to be a benign lipoma. This stuff scares the hell out of me as my dog is barely 5.

I hope Red stays comfortable for a very long time.

Did the biopsy reveal malignant lipoma? I was under the impression that lipomas are usually benign (sorry if this was covered already in the thread, I did not read all 17 pages).

These chameleons that we all love so much can't touch our dogs! (maybe I will regret stating this very soon lol)

Good luck Jan and Red

Thank you everyone for the kind words, prayers, thoughts and well wishes. Red is breathing better but threw up twice this morning due to the chemo. I just gave him another Cerenia because he lost his first one. Once again your concerns are all appreciated.

:( I just saw this - I will pray for your boy
I hope he has a easy time with it- the meds can be hard on them :( I had to put Elliott back on prednisone yesterday - stay strong , Elliott and I send our prayes and love to your whole crew <3

Oh, I'm so sorry Jan!

In the Australian cattledog world when one of our dogs is sick we say "Bentleys glowing on high power" hoping for a good result. The Bentley mark is the classic white forehead blaze almost all cattledogs have. Bentley was one of the breed's founders. We like to believe all of them are linked together psychically. They teach each other tricks and ways to irritate their humans through the Bentley mark.

Poor guy!!!!! Saying prayers every day for you Red, and your family!!!!!

Red has lymphoma, which is very different from lipoma despite sounding similar. Lipomas are fatty tumors that only affect a small area under the skin and are almost always benign (very, very small percentage can be malignant). Lymphoma is an aggressive cancer of lymphatic/immune system that affects the whole body. So your dog having a lipoma is nothing to be worried about. :)

Update on Red

I took Red to see Dr. Sones (oncologist) last Thursday and he wouldn't give Red another treatment. He thinks Laryngeal paralysis may be what Red has. Dr. Sones said that ever since I brought Red up to see him in Melbourne week before last he has been thinking about Red and trying to figure out what was going on with him. He researched Red's condition and found this disease that older Labs and Golden Retrievers usually get and discussed it with a surgeon and they think it might be the Laryngeal paralysis instead of the lymphoma causing Red's problems. Red has felt some better but no where near 100% and Dr. Sones said the Prednisone, which he's been on since his treatment up in Melbourne, would help with the swelling in Red's throat and make him feel some better but was not a cure. There is a surgery that can be done to fix it. Tomorrow Dr. Sones and the surgeon are going to put Red under a light anesthesia (after they do bloodwork to make sure everything is ok with Red) and the surgeon will look down Red's mouth and see if this thing is broken....can't remember what it's called. If it is broke they will put Red completely under and do surgery to tie back one of the cartilages. If is't not broke while he's lightly under they will do some test....one was a biopsy, can't remember the others. Dr. Sones seems to think Red will do ok if he has to have surgery. He said the surgery would not cure Red's voice but would greatly help the panting and breathing problems. Dr. Sone if such a nice man that truly cares about animals. I am so fortunate to have some truly wonderful vets for my pets. Please keep Red in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow.

I'll be praying for you all! Good luck Red! :) Hope everything goes perfectly and you are back home being as sweet as ever in no time;). Can't wait to hear how it went.

Hope everything goes well. Give him lotsa hugs. I'm sure he'll try his hardest to get better for you as you're a wonderful owner for putting so much time and energy into him. :)

Thank you for all for the nice comments, well wishes and prayers. It's definitely the Laryngeal paralysis and Red is in surgery right now.

Red is doing well and I'm going to pick him up in a few. She said his breathing was allot better. The vet said the only issue he had was some bloody diarrhea and she sometimes sees that after surgery that it can be a stress related thing. They walked him and he did his business a while ago and he had a shot of the metronidazol earlier and he's been fine since. She did offer to keep him there at the clinic over night if I was afraid he might mess the house but we both agreed that he'd be happier at home and I have the metronidazol pills left from the chemo.

Go Red! Jann, I am so happy to hear Red had a successful surgery and is going to be home tonight. There is no place like home!

Deb
