I bought a leopard gecko from them that only had 2 toes on one of its back feet. I felt sorry for the poor girl

PetSmart

I can say that the local Pet smart by my home has helped to save my Jacksons life! He was dumped at the animal shelter in a paper bag and left in a plastic critter box with nothing but cut newspaper for more than 10 hours before I got word of him and they got him to me. This little guy was in really bad shape, not eating/drinking and VERY weak. It was a Pet smart employee, who also has owned many herpes, including chameleons, who guided me as to the method of hand feeding as well as what to use. I was needing an extra set of hands to help and she volunteered. I will always be grateful for her being there to help with saving this guy. Each time I see her she inquires as to his progress! I have only had Trippy for about three weeks now, but she has just as much concern for him as I do!!

That said I will also add that at this same shop another employee gave me all wrong information as to the care of the baby veiled I got from them several months back! I was told I needed an enclosure, materials and supplements that were not really what should have been used, even when I questioned it I was assured it was correct! I am lucky that I knew better and secured the proper enclosure and materials; however Oscar unfortunately choked to death on a collard green upon his first time eating it. I was unable to remove the green in time; he died in my hands :( I have been devastated by this and still have guilt over not being able to save him, he was an AMAZING little guy :) I consider myself lucky to have known beforehand what I would need and why, but I would have ended up with a sick chameleon in the end had I not known and simply trusted what I was told by the "reptile expert" at Pet smart.

I think like with anything in life there are people who know what they are talking about and can be trusted and then others assume they know when in reality they do not! The best advice I can give, even to myself, is to research, research and more research before buying to ensure you know what is needed and then do not have to rely on a pet shop who may or may not know what they are talking about!!! I am new to this site, but have been looking at the wealth of advice and knowledge on this forum, WOW is all I can say!! It is so reassuring to know I have a place to come with any issues I may have as I attempt to bring this chameleon back to health!

The other day I saw a juvenile jacksons in I believe a 12x12x10 cage. %@$&#&$@! rediculous! Had only a basking bulb in there. Bowl for it to drink from, wood chips for substrate. and like two things for it to climb on. Next time I'm there and I see that crap I'm going ape shit on them

If you really want to change the way they treat their animals you are not going to get very far by "going ape shit on them". You will just convince them that you are just trying to cause a commotion in the store and that you are not someone to take seriously.

A much better way to get your point across is to come prepared with CORRECT care information printed off from a reliable source such as this forum. And, inform them that you will report their poor treatment to your local agency that inspects pet shops (depending on where you live it could be Animal Control, health department, or some sort of business inspection agency).

Very true. I have a good relationship with my local Petsart stores. They have my number and have handed it out to people to who needed help learning more about Chinese Water Dragons. I often go in with my CWD to visit and talk to people about their care and personalities. They are about to touch mine and if they want even let her hang on on them. Of coarse she is attached my a leash. Between this and Frontosa fish they have respect for what I have to say and learn. Some employees could care less... But there are several people at these stores that really do care... they just don't know there are better care information out there. They one closest to me won't even oder chams as they feel they do not have the experience to keep them.

i too am a petsmart employee. and as a few have mentioned above the care for animals varies from store to store. some do the very best, while others dont have a clue what to do. there are policies put into place for the stores to follow however not every store follows like they should. unfortunatly the enclosure you have all been describing (small glass cage) is a coroprate thing. if you would like to help us fix this then please make calls and emails into corporate, speaking to the store manager will not get any where. also the water dish is another policy by corprate. the average person doesnt know chams dont drink from dishes and when they see all the other animals with water dishes they start to cause an uproar about why the cham didnt have a water dish. my store also has a jackson. he gets misted by the petcare associates on a regular basis. my petcare manager has a beautiful vieled cham and i have a jackson myself i got from an expo. i am proud to say my co-workers are very knowledgable about the animals we sell however theres a slight higher increase of knowledge when it comes to snakes. we all have at least one lol but none the less if the associate doesnt know the answer, we find someone who does. whether its another associate or the in-store vet.

The reason I was Angry with the woman at our petsmart was because she was rude, talked backed to me when I calmly told her things were not right and had no remorse for this animals neglect. I understand all stores are different but here they weren't even trying.

There was this jackson's at a petsmart in awful condition, what are your policies for discounting sick animals? I know I have asked this question a lot, but I have heard a lot of different things, and I am trying find out their exact policies. This guy was only $75 which is a bargain compared to the $130s I have been hearing. He also had a water bowl, and his leaves obviously hadn't been misted. He was in a tiny GLASS enclosure with no ventilation. He had very little to climb on and had burns and skin peeling that was not shed. No info as to whether he was a male or a female (so I just call it he). What disturbed me though was how small he was. He looked to be 3-4 weeks!!!

what you should do next time is get the girls name and call corporate. they will fix that associates attitude. next time you wanna speak to someone about the animals ask to speak to the petcare manager or the store manager. and if they are rude to you then definately call it in to corporate. the problems yall are having is with the workers at these specific stores... not with petsmart in general. but unfortunately a persons experience with an associate will always be associated with any store/company it happens in.

i honestly do not know what the policy for discounting sick animals is. however anything in that condition shouldnt be on the sales floor. theres a room we have called ISO and its where all the sick/injured animals stay and recieve medical care until healed. if the animals condition is permanent, we will adopt them out for no price. this is after any wound has healed. and sometimes petsmart spends a wealthy amount to heal an animal its just guna give away. also most of the problems the animals at my store have are due to the vender we have and we dont get to pick and choose our venders. for a while our hamsters were coming in with mites and dermitis issuses. before any of them went on the floor they stayed in ISO until the vets cleared all the issues up. my hamster came from one of those bunches. ( i paid the regular sale price. no discount once they are healed with no permanent effects) and he is as healthy as can be. he alone cost $300+ to heal. also we dont control the size of the cham we get. the vender just sends them to us. but everything ive noticed varies from store to store.. policies are put into place but not all managers follow them like they should.

I took a prego female jacksons from petsmart elyria oh few weeks ago. I went in to get some salt mix and seen here sitting there. She looked in great shape only had her in for 2 days. I would never typically buy there especially at that price and from chain store. I knew nobody would care for them babies and should slowly degrade there so I jumped on it against my better judgement.
