Set-up Help?

Ok, I seem to find myself in a purchasing cycle here. I do research and buy stuff, then do more research and realize I bought the wrong stuff so I have to buy more "right stuff". I have a young female veiled chameleon named Zanzibar and want to provide her with only the best. I'm not cheap and want to pay as much as I need for sufficient living, I'm just sick of throwing my money away on the wrong stuff. I'll post a pic of her soon. I got her four days ago from a reptile show in Illinois and unfortunately the seller was away and some uninformed people helped me so I'm not exactly sure how old she is or anything.

I started with a 30 gallon extra tall aquarium with screen lid because they are arboreal. I have fake bendable vines in it and fake plants suction-cupped to the sides. I spray the inside with a spray bottle before work, after work, and again later at night. I only had a general basking light and then got a 5.0 compact for UVB.

My next step, I just bought (currently shipping to me) a reptarium cage with mesh screen 16.5"x28"x30" because I heard glass enclosures are bad, zoo med dripper with vine 79oz because I feel she is not getting enough water, dual 20" fixture with two ExoTerra 10.0 compacts because she needs UVB and I was under the impression that 10.0 is better because it goes farther, and a two setting timer to controll the lights.

Then I hear... that the reptarium cage is bad because it is too small and will melt because of the basking light, compact bulbs are bad so I need to buy other lights/fixture, simply spraying a basic water bottle is bad and I should get a mist spray bottle or an auto mister.

Can anyone help me? I've already spent about $80 on improper lighting, $100 on wrong cages, and am still buying other odds and ends to meet my cham's needs.

First of all, is my reptarium suitable? Do I need something else?
2) Any recomendations on a light/fixture? I will have the setup (depending on size recommended) on a wall very near sliding glass doors so she should get some natural sunlight.
3) Should I buy some live plant(s) or still feed Zanz by hanging kale next to her perch? - I do feed her crickets and have some waxworms on the way too.
4) Should I buy an auto mister? They're expensive but I'll gladly buy one if she needs it.
5) Should I keep her food in a bowl mounted high in her cage or should I let the insects run free?

Can anyone please provide specifics for exactly what I should get/do, such as a certain product on a certain website? I need to hurry so her health doesn't suffer in the mean time.

I really appreciate any and all help and hope that I can become a master care-taker for Zanz.
Nick

Now, hopefully you will have a chance to read that and I will answer more of your questions. You are right-glass cages are not reommended for most chameleons.

I personally use Reptariums and think they are great baby cages and even house adults in them, they have their pros and cons but are a great starter. The other plus is that when you need to get a larger screen cage you will have the Reptarium to put the cham in while cleaning or you can use it to set him outside in the sun.

Compact bulbs are NOT recommeneded. The bulb in my list is the one most people will suggest.

Live plants are great for humidity and for holding water for chams to drink.

You can get an automister-it is on my wish list, but you can hand mist one cham just fine (I am hand misting 8!)
Welcome and please ask questions-people here are very willing to help!

On this subject i noticed alot of people when saying what they use Minerall -O
is this because you keep your chameleons outside or is it just a better product than the indoor?

I really like the LLL screen cages and have a few of them. The size depends on how big your girl is. That would be perfect for a 5 month-adult Veiled, but if she is really small you need a smaller one so she can find food. Do you have a picture of her and length?

I will post some pics as soon as I get home in a couple hours. Question, so I need a 20" fixture for an 18" bulb?

1) First of all, is my reptarium suitable? Do I need something else?
Some people don't prefer this type of cage, but it is perfectly suitable for a chameleon. It's just recommended to set up some sort of drainage and to elevate the light so that it is not touching the screen.
2) Any recomendations on a light/fixture? I will have the setup (depending on size recommended) on a wall very near sliding glass doors so she should get some natural sunlight.
As Julirs already said the Zoo Med 5.0 is preferred. The glass door will filter the UVA/UVB.

Live plants are always good, though sometimes it is a challenge trying to keep them alive inside. They are a great way to keep the humidity up. Here is an article about starting off with live plants:http://www.chameleonnews.com/plants.html You should also try to offer her a variety of veggies that you can hang up or put in a little bowl for her. A variety of insects can be used. The more common are crickets, mealworms, silkworms, hornworms, waxworms, and dubia.
4) Should I buy an auto mister? They're expensive but I'll gladly buy one if she needs it.
To start out with I would recommend something like this: http://www.home-improvement-superst...m=CPC&zmam=8568711&zmas=4&zmac=87&zmap=826527
5) Should I keep her food in a bowl mounted high in her cage or should I let the insects run free?
You could try either method. Here is a good design for a mounted bug bowl: http://www.chameleonnews.com/year2003/jan2003/hints/hints.html
Replies to your questions are in red. I always try to keep all my receipts that way I can always return the things that are not needed. Good luck with your new girl. This website is awesome, and has tuns of information about almost ever topic!

Scratch the mister I mentioned previously, I read a review, not good. Any suggestions on a good mister?

I will probably pick up that hand mister too. Thanks for the tip on the bug bowl! Sounds like it should work. Do you rip one of the jumping legs off the cricket so they can't escape? You mention to elevate the light. Do I need to elevate the UVB light along with the basking light?

If you want to buy an expensive automated mister, herpmist.com and pro-products.com are the best places to look. I just use the hand method, but it's hard work! I'm saving up for one of the auto misters.

I use a bowl to feed but I don't mind if they escape because my chameleon likes hunting for them anyway. Most of them stay in the bowl.

UVB light has a maximum range of about 12 inches and I don't think it will melt the cage, so I wouldn't elevate it more than an inch or 2.

Actually the Herp Mist, from www.herpmist.com is on my wish list too. Many people also use http://www.pro-products.com/promist.html. I'm just waiting till I get the funds together, and move everyone back outside again to get a professional system.
You don't have to rip of any legs, but you can if you notice them escaping. Usually if you place the screen in the correct position it is hard for them to escape.
I would put a wood block or something under the UVB tube to elevate it, and then rig up some way to clamp the the basking light somewhere, just to ensure you don't burn the screen.

Thank you everyone for all the help. Here's a picture of Zanzibar...

I guess I'll leave it at manually misting for now. Does anyone have an idea of how old she is according to her size?

I got the currently questionable chameleon from the all animal expo in northern illinois. The guy told me that it is a veiled chameleon so if it is not, I was swindled. Here are some more pics.
