Set-up Help?

I still don't think that is a Veiled.

Maybe Chamaeleo (Chamaeleo) chamaeleon???

Experts-help!

Hey Brad, Julirs makes a good point. I noticed Chris Anderson identified that other chameleon that Julirs posted the link to. How can you tell if this girl is a veiled or the other kind, a general chameleon I think it was?

Yea, I know for a fact that isnt a veiled!
I hope you have that guys number, name, card.......something.
I would have guessed Senegal or Common, but that has already been answered.
wow.........

It's a female Chameleo senegalensis. She's a wild caught specimen - you can tell by the black scratches on her face and body. They are imported in fairly large numbers annually.

Once settled into captivity, Senegals make a great chameleon to work with, but getting to that point is very difficult, particularly if you are a beginner to chameleons. Is there any way of exchanging her for a captive bred Veiled?

Now ... I did think possibly graceful chameleon.

But .... then I thought, well ... they are all a little unique and that casque is starting (which I didn't see in the first picture) ....sure it's a veiled.
Now I'm really looking and noticing that the eyebrow becomes the edge of the casque ....that's not veiled ....the spots along the dorsal ridge? ....that's not typical of a veiled ....
I don't know. You all know I'm awful at this game .... where's Chris A. or Trace or Kent ??? Or Will or Mike or, or, or someone who is good at i.d.-ing
I don't know what it is.

uh............ I'm not sure what to do. What a jerk! I made a beginner mistake and did not keep any information, I got my "veiled" and was just happy to have it. Even if I did have his info, I'd feel bad giving this little girl back. I've grown attached in the short time I've had her. So she's just a common chameleon (Chamaeleo) I guess. I read the article from the ID My Cham Please post and she seems to resemble that cham but only smaller with less color. I'll love her as if she was a veiled but hopefully the care isn't too much different. I thought she was a veiled because she would rock on the leaves like I heard veileds were known to do, but I guess all chams probably do it. I just figured she was a baby and that's why she didn't look like a grown veiled. Well, this changes things a little.

where's Chris A. or Trace or Kent ??? Or Will or Mike or,

We've been discussing it on MSN. Where've you been?

Haha, seriously though, I wasn't quite sure it was a Ch. senegalensis (even though I've got one 20 feet away) because of some of the markings/color. But, I may have been confusing some of the "import scratches and rubs" for actual color and pattern. Ditto what Trace said about wild caughts.

Nickmas, the care ultimately isn't too much different than a Veiled. The problem is she isn't captive bred and that creates a whole slew of problems for you.

The importation process is very taxing on chameleons and she is dehydrated (not horribly though) so the best thing you can do is give her a good 15 minute shower. Place a plant in your tub, aim the shower head towards the wall so the water bounces off the wall and onto the plant. Place her on the plant and leave her there for about 15 minutes. When that is done, put her back in her cage, give her a few bugs and ignore her. WC chameleons are scared so handling her does not help her settle down and feel comfy.

Once that is done, you need to decide if you want to keep her. There are plenty of people here that can help you with acclimating a WC cham. It's difficult, but not impossible.

If I wasn't so mired in the bitaeniatus family of chameleons, I'd totally work with the Senegals. They are truly an underrated species.

Good luck,
Trace

This keeps getting better and better... First it's not a veiled, then it's imported and wild caught, and then it's some very difficult chameleon to keep and I'm a beginner. I can't exchange it, I don't have the info. I'll just have to do the best I can with her. My fiance got really sick for a couple days right after we got the cham and I'm starting to think it had something to do with it. She probably didn't wash her hands good enough after handling and being wild caught may have made it worse. Do you really think it's much harder to keep this type than the veiled?

The first day I got her i put two crickets on a lizard hammock/netting and she ate them right away. Then she ate two out of my hand right after that. Yesterday I had a bowl near her and she ate a cricket out of it. She is very very friendly. If I stick my hand in the cage, slightly under her, she'll walk up my arm. She likes to crawl up into my hair. It's even difficult to put her back in her cage because she keeps climbing up my arm instead of climbing onto the fake plants. She has never hissed or anything but will get a little scared if you approach her too fast with your hand. One time she was sitting on her perch under the basking lamp with her mouth open and after some research I think that was just because she was hot and opened her mouth to cool instead of moving to a different location.

Yea, any help is great. I want her to have it good. I'm going to put her in the shower right away. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

well, since you already got him and you cannot exchange it.. I say go for it and try to care him as best as you can. :)
If it is WC, you might want to get it checked to the vet sooner or later.
Have a fecal test to see if she carries some parasites.

Sorry for your GF... I always tell people to practice hygiene when you care for your chameleon.:)
