Shipping Chameleons

I was thinking about this the other day and I figured I'd ask...but when you mail order Chameleons, don't they get scared? And how are companies (at least reputable ones) guaranteeing that their chameleon will have a very high survival rate? I don't quite understand how that works.

They pretty much sleep through it. It's dark, they have something to hold onto, they're pretty good. No company can guarantee every shipment will be successful, but reputable ones will compensate you for losses during shipment.

I know I was freaked out at the idea myself but after a very bad experience at a Reptile show I realized that shipping from a reputable breeder is probably the best way to insure a healthy animal.

haha my cham came in like a insulated box in a lil bag... he had a bunch of paper towels .... he was alseep when i opened it and ran for the nearest green... then i gave him water :D

Shipping of Reptiles is not perfect. Honestly there are things you can do to help for the safest journey such as Proper Packaging to ensure that even if the box is flipped that the container will not rattle around, or get crushed buy something else in the box. I think the most difficult part is taking into consideration what the weather is doing.

You can do all this but sometimes Fragile/this side up warnings on side of box can get ignored, it can get dropped, it can get crushed on accident if something is put on top of it too heavy.

However as said before most reputable companies will make good on shipping mishaps.

we just try to make it as dark and comfortable as possible. about 1 in every 50 chams i ship will die, but then we just compensate. CB chameleons generally do well when being shipped if everything is taken care of coreectly

My chameleon came in a cup in a box filled with newspaper and a heat pad, once I opened it he crawled right out onto his tree and started to bask. The only scary part about the whole process was that the delivery man left the package outside in the cold and didn't even ring the doorbell. It clearly said live animal on the box to.

I often too felt bad knowing they were shipped but due to my husbands ptsd & the only things that help are our chameleons, they have been certified as service animals that can go anywhere we do so if we ever purchased one that has to be shipped we will fly out anywhere in the US & pick them up ourselves. I feel very lucky to be able to do that

I forget which site it was but there was a home video of the entire process...from the delivery person at the door all the way to the unpackaging. I'm sure it's a safe process but I would assume it'd probably be nerve wracking for the chameleon...at least that is my assumption. But....sounds like it is somewhat of an 'okay' experience for the chameleon.

this is a great thread!
i have often wondered the same things
and after talk to a friend of mine about purchasing a pet online he seemed really put off by the idea.
however you wont get a better cham at a local pet store.... in my opinion
well maybe you can but nowhere here has any panthers of any type.
