Sick / Fungus or open wound?

I'm pretty sure he is not coming back. Sorry, but I'd also be a little intimidated to return and respond after reading some of the responses (despite acknowledging that he is not the owner and didn't cause this).

Seems he just doesn't want this Cham to " die on his watch ". The owner is probably back and this Cham's faith may be sealed.:(

I understand what you are saying and you are probably right but sometimes things just have to be said in a blunt and straight to the point kind of way. It obviously was not his pet(unless he was just saying that) but regardless those conditions are nothing short of horrible. An egg crate for the chameleon to hide under? I mean that is just absurd. We see too often, owners who have been misled on care, but what is wrong with doing your own research?. I know, I did. Like 3 or 4 months worth before I even thought about owning one of these magnificent creatures. Sometimes it is hard to feel sympathy for the owners, but not hard at all to feel that way for the poor chameleons. JMHO

Carol I totally understand what your saying. But in cases like this where a petsitter comes on the forum to ask for help, we as a forum should be careful to not scare the person away. They are seeking help and some of the members were not offering help they were offering up their own commentary. There are times when we need to control our anger over the condition of the animal in order to convey the proper husbandry info to the person seeking help. Jmo...

And I cant agree more an egg crate is a pitiful excuse for cage furnishings.

Trust me , i feel the same way. And i totally agree with doing your research before getting ANY pet.

But this is a case of "don't kill the messanger". He had good intentions by joining the forum and making this thread. Had it been the owner i can understand the blunt/direct nature.

Whats done is done , i guess!

I know if my chameleon looked like that I wouldn't say I owned it. Just saying ;)

If I was just watching it, I could care less about the remarks people say too, as I'm doing my best and its the owners negligence. Either way that chameleon could use better care and some one needs to give it to him .

If they took the time to sign up post pics and ask questions, id imagine they care enough to come back .

I hate to ask this of you all, but I don't want him dead on my watch....don

Even people who go out of their way (lets face it, he is going out of his way by even regestering and posting). If met with restistance they will just say "the heck with this, it's the owners negligence. NOT MY FAULT" and just wait it out till the owner can come back and finish what they started.

you are exactly right and I know the guy was only trying to help the poor chameleon. Sometimes I think with my heart and not my head I guess! There were probably a few things that I should have refrained from saying also. It is just hard!!

I know, alls I can hope is he read the threads and took some action.

We go through all kinds of emotions when it comes to the passion of our pets. It is expected to be upset that an creature can be in bad health and it is out of this passion that we all react in different ways. We all want what is best. Sometimes I just have to take a very deep breath before I can even say or type anything.

I was involved many for many years of animal rescue. I will not even begin to tell some of the severe cases of neglect and abuse that I saw. But one day a lady came in that was abusive to her dogs and was going to sign them over. Of coarse many got upset to see the way she had abused them. But after that she had decided she didn't want to deal with any of us wanting to save the two animals. I was caring with her and gave her my phone number and let her know if she ever needed any help with them to give me a call. She did and we were able to get these pets the help they needed and adopted into better homes. She also gave a very large donation of supplies and money as after we had talked several times she realized she was doing the right thing.

We just have to remember that we are all going to have many differnt emotions when we see a pet that we don't even know... yet we all care about, in these types of medical distress. JMO :)

I am very hopeful that the poster is still reading the posts and weeding through all the information and doing what he can do to help this poor Cham.

Yep!! Not to mention there are 4 or 5 pages of posts and not once does anyone ask him to fill out the "ask for help form" to see what he has, doesnt have and needs to change. Kinyonga posted the only helpful information in this entire thread but it was probably too late and the thread starter is long gone. What a shame.

Yea so many people scared him away. You gave a lot of helpful info yourself. People made suggestions to his question if it was an Open wound that is what he wanted to know. Its a shame people even buy pets or watch them when they could care only that is doesn't die on their watch.

Maybe there was some visible information he would know that would be helpful. He did seem to know a few things, might have been info he got here from this useful foru (like taking the Cham out into direct sunlight, since there was no UVB). You could have done this instead of correcting him on his obervation of the Cham's color.

Just Saying...

Well, just saying, I wasn't so much correcting him as ASKING what he meant by it changing color, as already stated, seeing if it had been brown for a long time and such.

I'll leave this alone. I see where it's leading.;)

But i apologize if i am missreading your tone.

I think he has MBD, because he is very lethargic. Some natural light yesterday and dusted crickets gave him a little spark, but still, he hardly moves at all. His skin still changes colors based on surroundings.

Also, what do you mean he changes color to his surroundings? Chameleons do not change color to what they're on, they change for mood, such as stress or the opposite sex, temperature, etc.

I ment your tone in this post ^^;)
You didn't misread my tone. You just didn't read further into the thread to what I already stated.

Oh, i read the whole thread.:)

PS: PM/Visitor message me any responces , so we can keep this thread on topic incase the OP returns.

I did not see it necessary to have him fill out the form considering he does not own the chameleon and just took him in for a neighbor and was pet sitting. That was my reason for asking him to post pictures of the set up as pictures speak a thousand words and it proves 100% true in this case. I thought telling him he needed a UVB light(which he did not have) was critical and important info. I would consider that helpful information. JMO

Everyone is so eager to help but slamming a caregiver that actually started to seek advice where the owner did not, not such a great outcome.
Telling them everything is wrong fix it is crazy- pick two of the worst things, deal with them. Then add more advice.

It also helps if the posters read what was already given for advice and not just repeat it.

There were a lot of tones. People jumping in and repeating the same info to him.
With cap's heck I would have left..jmo

That chameleon already has MBD from what I can see in the pictures of his set up. I was able to zoom in and he has curved and not straight limbs. I'd take him to the vet ASAP. Not that I am being rude, but he needs a proper care and improvements immediately if you want him to survive and be happy!

Totally agree with you there. I mean we can not stress this enough for new chams owner. Do your research before you buy a chameleon. Even if the petstore gave him/her bad tips on how to take care on the chameleon, he/she should have at least done some sort of research to understand the proper way to take care of a chameleon. I really hope the owner would join the forums so we could help him out. I also feel bad for the pet-sitter. This is not his fault. He is simply taking care of the mistakes someone has already made.
