Silkworms! :D

This is my first batch of silkworms that I've ever tried to hatch and raise. 99% of the 1000 eggs hatched and no die offs so far! Sorting silkies is fun isn't it? haha

It's used for weaving in crafts. I cut it to size and then stapled it to the back of a picture frame. I got both items at the local dollar store. I have made big ones and little ones. I'll be putting these in a rubbermaid drawer. Each with different sizes of worms. This is my first hatching and I'll start 1000 more eggs in a week so I always have silkies on the go for all 14 of my chameleons :)

When the silkies are young, they'd fall right through this, but screen door mesh would work for new born silkies better. I find this system just makes it easier to clean up the frass that falls through it.

wow 14 chameleons, sometimes i feel overworked by one, lol. very cool by the way. ill go look at the dollar store for those. thanks!

What kind of food are you giving them?

I also thought about raising silkies. I live in an apartment so my big question is....Do they smell bad??? :) I have silkies here, but they are in cups in my fridge and I'm not raising them. I don't want to stink up a place thats not mine and that I have a deposit on! :D Also the reason why I don't raise crickets...I could just see getting blamed for a cricket infestion (even if it wasn't me!)

just wait until they start releasing turds that are too big to fall through the canvas..gets a bit messier at that point lol

They don't smell at all. They are easy to raise and keep alive. Also very easy to feed off as you stick a few the the inside of the screen cage :D
