Silkworms - dropped like flies!! HELP!!

I purchased 125 silkworms...decided I'd feed half to my chams, and keep the other half. So I was trying to get 60+ silkworms to cocoon, and had zero success. ALL DIED except for 2...which didn't look that great either, so I just fed 'em to my chams. Some notes:

Had them in 4 different containers, fed them 2 mulberry leaves a day, cleaned out their containers daily (leftover dried up leaves, poop). Fed them shredded carrots after the leaves ran out. They seemed to die for no reason...they'd be deflated, yellow goo...probably bacterial infections? Not entirely sure what's going on.

This was my second experience with silkies. The first time, I saw some success, but unfortunately fed the most off to my Jacksons. I only saved two, which boths successfully cocooned. But they both came out as females. Yes, I know, I'm an idiot. Help me out? :p

A few questions-

Were the tubs you placed them in sterile?

Did you handle them at all?

Was there moisture/mould in the tubs?

I read somewhere that they can't eat anything but mulberry, well they will eat it but it could kill them but I could be mistaken.

Yes, they were sterile

Only handled the ones I was feeding. I moved some of them but I used my oversized cricket tongs

No moisture or nothing...and they started dying off before I fed them carrots...which I read was okay for them. But yeah, prob 80% were dead by the time I had to resort to that.

That does just sound like a bad batch then. We got a tub of really small ones once and they all died off fairly quick too :(
