My cameleons spike started to become very dry and white months ago, but he seemed fine with it. Im away on holiday and my daughter said he has knocked his back and a spine has come off and there is a small open wound, is there anything she can put on it to make it heal? Or any ideas what it is?
She took it to the RSPCA and they said they coud not even see him, and she is on a low income.

Hello!
Welcome to Chameleon Forums!
Its great to have you here. ;)

That looks like he has been burned, IMO.

The wound should be kept very clean, cant stress that enough.

A antibiotic ointment should be used to keep it from getting infected.

It would probably be best for a vet to see him.

Do you know what type of basking light you are using? Brand/watt/type?

Maybe a burn like solid snake said, or possible severely stuck shed that had cut circulation off to his spines.

either way still needs vet.

i can see raw flesh underneath, so you need medicaton to prevent infection, or kil lwhatever is already there.

Is the RSPCA just unable to deal with a chameleon? Is it possible that another clinic might have someone? Their website days they deal with birds so there's at least some attention to exotics.

As noted, you'll want to get an antibiotic ointment (the kind you'd put on a scraped knee) for that wound. You also really want to find out if he's burning himself somewhere in the cage. Does the bulb touch the screen? Get in there with your fingers and see if there's a place that's hot.

What is the temperature at the basking spot?

Thank you guys, have made an appointment for my daughter to take him there tomorrow, will let you know the outcome :)

The RSPCA are not interested in treating Marlie, they said it would have to go to a private vet 35 miles from where we live.

Months ago a friend by mistake bought a 100 watt bulb which caused the burning to his back, its months later now this has happend.

He has a 60 watt bulb in cage on top of his tank, he has a huge tank about 5 feet by 2 feet, and 3 feet high.

Will let you all know tomorrow about outcome from vet :)

And thank you all again

Is this his first shed since being burned? In the second picture all the white looks like shedding skin. I see a lot on his knees and the top of his head as well. It looks like these were the spots he was burned?

It looks to me like he's shedding and the dead tissue from the burn is coming off with his shed.

Keeping the wounds treated as has been previously outlined is your best bet so he doesn't get an infection. Hopefully it will heal well. I'm glad you've already dealt with the cause of the burn.

oooo!!!! thats a burn i have a male that i took in a couple years ago here is a pic he has some bad burns too
