spray painted enclosure

I am going to build an enclosure out of wood and was wondering if it would be harmful to the cham if I spray painted the wood or any suggestions on paints

I have only ever used water based stains and water based finishes.....Hate to cover up that beautiful wood!!!!

If your going to paint it you want to use a latex paint easy to clean and not harmful tot he pets.. but you want to air it out a couple of days before using it..
