Sprite bottle insect feeder

Love all the pictures, I like your idea the best,I already have two ginger ale bottles I am going to use, it even blends in better/green is a good color for a Cham cage :D

I went shopping on the weekend and found a cola bottle. It's not like the ones I am familiar with from Canada, which are the same material as the ones I saw while visiting the UK... The material is harder, and it's probably going to be a pain to cut. it's also not green... every bottle is clear, unless it's glass! (Seems like germans don't believe in dying plastic, it needs to be clear! Or something.. I have yet to see a thin-ish plastic bottle, everyone seems to come thick, or in glass bottles. It's really annoying!)

Going to work on building it this weekend. I will let you know how it turns out! :D Thanks again for the idea. I always did wonder which direction I should put the bottle and such....

Also, is there a form of drainage? (Not sure if this was answered already, I'm about to go to bed, so I don't have time to check through posts at the moment...)

Now the question is, is it dubia proof? Im still not sure i want to leave the little critters in anything since i have an open door cage.

There isn't in Simba's as the feeder doesn't get any water in it because it is in the top corner out the way of the mister, but it's easy enough to do. Just tape some mesh into the bottom so any water can just drain out of the neck of the bottle ;)

I'm finding that the locusts can climb up the cellotape in there, but not the plastic of the bottle, so I suppose if you made the bottom section (below the hole in the front) deep enough, and there was no tape leading up to the hole, they wouldn't be able to get out as they're rubbish climbers when it comes to plastic tubs! ;)

I'm bumping this thread for later when I want to copy the bottle design. I have been using the shallow, white deli cups with failure. I think the green bottle design is perfect.

Does it work for crickets cause I have no idea what kind of feeder is in that green bottle. Is it true chams like green like a human with a green shirt helps them not to be I stressed?

love it ! where did you get the netting stuff?

I think you can use window screen just as easily. You just silicone it in place. But I have seen that other stuff at Michael's craft stores. I think it is some sort of plastic crochet stuff or something like that.

aaaah ya the crochet net .. thanks ..knew I seen something like it but couldn't think what it was or where I saw it haha

It's needlepoint canvas. :)

I just made this today... Omg best thing ever! Ty to this site for all the info ect.. My little guy I got last Sunday.. Wasn't sure if he was eating the crickets! Some free range n some in a cup that he never ate...I just hung it this morning and after him climbing in the pop bottle feeder.. ( weirdo he is!) and climbing on it to the top.. He's sitting on his branch in front of it now and just snatched two crickets!! I'm so happy!! :)

just one quick question, why is the bottle inverted? doesn't that crowd the crickets? just asking pardon my ignorance.

I just had to resurrect this thread to tell you how impressed am with this feeding station. I don't know who originally came up with the design, but you should get a patent on it. The green bottle just makes it better. I added white tape across the bottom of the cut out so the Chams can see it better. I also closed off the bottom with the needle point canvas so the cap isn't needed, and tiny bug debris can fall thru the bottom.

For those looking to cup train, this is fantastic. :)

Do u mean turned upside down?

It's so any bug dirt or excess supplement powder can fall out of the bottom (The mesh covers the hole inside the bottom of the bottle.

I don't feed crix, his staple is locusts which seem to want to climb as soon as they're in there, so they climb the mesh at the back and he picks them off ;)

Yes I will bump this once again just because this is the basis for many a feeder cup I've made. And I'll echo the above sentiment as well: if you're using a particularly clear plastic, put some tape or some color on the lip/bottom because I've had a couple chameleons that will try to shoot their tongue at the side through the wall.

Thank you very much :D

Not sure on the original idea. I've seen a few variations. Sunny Delight Bottles, Milk cartons, pop bottles etc.... I just thought the green bottle looked better.

Great idea on the tape! Simba has shot the bottle from the outside a few times!LOL

My next one will also have a different colour mesh as the yellow/green was occasionally making the locusts hard to see as they blended in with it lol

Yes, will also have mesh in the bottom of mine as before ;)
