Strongyle & Coccidia Parasite Treatment

Hello Everyone...

Okay so the new cham I got on Sat. has Strongyle & Coccidia Parasites I had a fecal done this morning on her...I know theres a number of drugs that can be used to get rid of them..Pancure, Albon, Ivermectin..Etc. Which is the best to be used for chams, and less harsh on them...Any articles are welcome!

Have our chameleons been playing footies? I just got a fecal back today that one of mine has strongles also. But I am at the egg stage not the larvae. I am using panacur for 3 days then 10 days later for another 3 days. Just my opinion.

Okay, I'll take a note of that! I actually work at a vet office..My Dr/Boss is new with the chameleons..So0o she asked if I could do some research on what other dr's most commonly use for chameleons. Did youru vet say after the second treatment the Parasites would go away??

Panacur will not work for coccidia so you will probably need 2 meds. My daughter has use Ponazuril several times. It works the best and is easy on the chameleon. I would not recommend the Albon from my own personal experience.

Yes twice is expected to clear it up but my guy only has one of the parasites your new little one has. Your problem with coccidia is a lot bigger issue that what I have going.

Coccidia needs a sulfa drug.
Caution should be used with ivermectin since it may kill some species of chameleon.
Panacur/fenbendazole will work with strongyloides.

add my personal experience to what Jan is suggesting.
My veiled completely stop eating after Albon treatment and have to be force fed until I stop the treatment.
I used Ponazuril afterward to treat the coccidia and have a wonderful result.

it should be noted, that regardless of drug(s) used, proper and frequent cage sterlization, needs to be part of any parasite treatment plan, if it is to be successful. jmo

I agree. My cham finally got rid of the coccidia and then reinfested. I found that the only think that will kill coccidia is the 30 volume peroxide from the beauty supply stores.

You will need 2 meds Ponzuril is only for coccidia.

Hey JannB,

Yes I plan on spraying her cage down part bleach part water every couple days to make sure there dead and gone, espescially after she's been treated. Yeah I figure I'll do Ponazuril for the Cocc. and the Panacur for the Strongyles...I PM Dave Weldon his opinion on using both at the same time..or to treat the parasites one at a time?! Any Suggestions??

Also are there any strong side effects with using Pancur??

No. Ponazuril will not treat Strongyles.
Panacur have a pretty safe margin. They do not affect the chameleon. Panacur works by blocking the carbohydrate metabolism in worm, essentially starving them to death. The only worry that you need to have is when the worms are all dead they release some toxic material inside.
That is why panacur and other parasitical treatment is best done periodically. Slowly, killing the parasites little by little; So, your chameleon's body do not need to deal with too much toxin..

I forgot if Ponazuril tends to dehydrate your chameleon.. But, I know Albon does.. So, lengthen your misting regiment or give your chameleon opportunity to drink more during the treatment.

Okay Thanks! yeah I know she has a TON of the Cocc. Parasite and very few of the Strongyles in fact we only saw 1 on the slide..which is good But I know theres always more, but not like the Cocc.

Ponazuril Dose for 40G Cham

Okay what would be the dosage that I would use for my 40G cham for Ponazuril?? I saw another member used .04 for a 83G Cham..Should I use .02 Since it's about half the weight?? Let me know!

I don't think bleach will kill any coccidia oocysts in the enclosure.
30 volume developer is something I never thought of but it makes sense that it works.
I think Ammonia has worked as well.

I don't have this at the top of my head. It's been a while since I have the need to treat mine with Ponazuril.. Dave Weldon should know more about it..
just remember to be careful with the dosing. 0.02 and 0.2 cc is quite a huge different. the 0.02 cc is two of those thinnest mark in the tuberculine type of syringe. I know that you probably won't make that mistake.. But, I always warn everyone nonetheless.

and, yes.. Brad is correct. Bleach is not effective against coccidia when they are in dormant stage (oocyst).
I used a hot steamer and blast the surface with it.
I have not used ammonia.. and will probably try it later since my steam cleaner is broke.

I thought the name Ivermection rang an alarm bell in my head. I just checked back over the thread about Lily when she was poorly, and it was the drug that I am pretty sure contributed to Lily's death. Please avoid using Ivermectin - Lily was given this under the name of Panomec. The vet assured me it was safe for everything 'from an elephant to a chameleon'. However, she made a massive turn for the worse after it was administered, and died a few hours later. Please do not allow your vet to use Ivermectin on any of your chameleons.

Edit: the type of parasite that Lily had were Strongyles (trichostrongyles).
