Take a guess

So much fun!! Malthe eggs.....yay! Did you share that on here yet?

No, I didn't. I can't find anyone who has hatched them before. I heard of one person hatching three from a clutch and that's it. I don't even know if they lived. No, I'm not feeling very confident about those eggs, that's for sure but I am super excited you made the connections in Madagascar that you did, that is for sure. I learned a lot about my malthe from this adventure of trying to identify the crypticum.

I definitely don't want a thread of "congratulations" on my clutch only to have none hatch. I feel lucky the female is still alive. They are not as straight forward as quads or graciliors, that's for sure.

Losing that little malthe female that was gravid with fertile eggs from a breeding in my house really knocked me for a loop. Opening her up explained everything but to have her do so well and be so compromised at the same time just blew me away. You saw her--she looked gorgeous and then she crashed. (Visceral gout/kidney damage complicated by five or six 2" long lungworms in each lung.)

That was terrible and it's a shame the eggs couldn't have been saved. I did appreciate you sharing the necropsy pics with me. Those were some big lung worms

Great pick up Joel. I know of a couple other imports of Madagascar chameleons that had Calumma crypticum shipped as Calumma brevicorne. Wrong ID with the shipping over sea's. I know of one keeper who has a colony of Calumma crypticum already. I could not say though weather his females have laid eggs yet though.

Best Regards

I understand that. I honestly never had much interest in calumma other than the crypticum. But now knowing how little is known, it seems pointless not to be part of it. I want to figure some of these species out. I think there is hope for the malthe eggs. I truly do. You have a little bit until the diapause is needed and hopefully nice concrete ground temps will be available by then.

Thanks, Jeremy. I know it has happened I know who you are speaking about actually. Yes, they have. Whether they hatch or not is the question. I don't think they were given a diapause.

PM sent...

I am by no means complaining about the new Madagascar quotas. However Calumma crypticum is one species that remains that could make the Madagascar CITES Calumma quota list.

Wow! Those are awesome! I hope you have good luck with them!

What? I have an interest in medicine and the human body. I have animal bones too. A civil war bone saw, teppanning drill, circumcision kit and various other delightful Oddities I could give tours
This reminded me of someone I follow in Instagram @oddfellow_antiques ... so ... interesting haha

I think the one thing Joel and I took out of this is how very little is known about them and the rules people used in the past to identify them are not necessarily correct.

@jpowell86 I have now seen the answer after being absent from the forums for a few hours... I hate you about right now *pouts* I can't use correct words to describe my envy XD

Don't be envious, be thrilled that Joel has them. He'll put everything into figuring them out which is more than most people can do or even will do. He has connections to the scientists others don't have. I am relieved Hippo is in his hands. Although I desperately wanted to have Hippo here just for my pleasure, I'm thrilled he is with someone who will make sure he gets what they need to reproduce.

My malthe will benefit because of this, too. I learned a lot about where they are collected from that is counter intuitive. It's just a win win all around.

This is a still shot. But he stays like that hunting. I think it is hilarious. I will try to get some video before I take him home.

@Dragon1516 My malthe hunt the same way, rearing up on their hind legs and anchoring themselves with their tails and reaching with their bodies. It's different from the way another chameleon hunts. The malthe are very agile and comfortable on the ground. They are just different. I really like this group. I hope we are successful. They are super cute and the females are really beautiful in their own right, both the crypticum and the malthe.

Ken is the winner!
Holly F*ck man you have one of my top 3 species.
btw are you sure the female is crypticum? crypticum males, their dorsal "Crest" as far as I know have "spikes" now and then that are higher than the other spikes. is the same on females?
because on the female´s pictures. their spikes are hard to see if some are actually higher than the other. I hope you understand what I mean.

You guys will make it happen I know that. And thats really cool how they eat definitely different than other chameleon.

Definitely right, sometimes I do have those moments of, "I want, gimme gimme" XD. Even though I know I would not take them because I would not be able to set them up to where not only would I be satisfied but neither would they. If any two people can unravel the mysteries of this lesser known species it's you two for sure. Then maybe one day I will be able to find CBB either from you guys or from people who learn from the knowledge you put out there. I am so looking forward to any possible updates ^^ Love you two and the work you do <3
