The Chameleon Handbook - 3rd Ed.

Ok, this was talked about in another thread but it didn't have the book's name in the title of the thread. I wanted to offer a little more on this book as I just received a copy yesterday and so far am quite impressed. First, it is actually 28 pages longer than the 1st edition which was published in 1995. It has a lot of new photographs, which, for me, makes it worth the $12 purchase price alone. Brad Ramsey's blog, Raising Kitty the Veiled Chameleon, is also recommended as a great reference in the end. Also of note was a photograph of an expired chameleon the author states was a hybrid Furcifer verucossus x antimena! He also speculated that because of the range of F. angeli, the species may be a natural hybrid of F. pardalis and F. rhinoceratus. Interesting stuff! The book also seems to contain a lot of new species profiles since the first edition (the only other I own) as well as updates on the caging and health/medicine sections. Like I said, so far I'm quite impressed having just glossed over it, but would definitely recommend it as being well-worth the low price for all the information and photographs of rare species.

im sold, id grab it for the hybrid pic alone.

the handbook references brads blog? i assumed the basic knowledge avail for ref on the blog would have been covered in the " handbook ".

writers got to stick together i guess.

Oh, yeah. I ordered it from Borders because I had a gift card. They don't carry it in stores but it just came out. It's published by Barron's so I imagine it will start showing up at pet stores and herp shows all over soon, though.

Oh, wow! I just realized the photo on the back cover is Ryan's Dr. Gonzo and it's the same photo on the cover of this month's Reptiles Magazine.

Hehe, and Dave Weldon's photo credits may be the wrong pages. Unless Dave took the photo of mating Oustalet's that was in the 1995 edition also?

I picked it up on Sunday after it was recommended on a thread last week (I think). It's an excellent book as a quick reference on things I already know, and it has a lot on some of the more rare species. I really like it. Most of the bookstores here have it, and it's a good price. Probably available on Amazon as well.

I bought the book on amazon after the last thread about it and I think its great for a beginner such as myself. Using this as a quick reference and then using this forum, I feel like I have a tremendous amount of information available to me as a new cham keeper. I love all the pictures.

hmmm that is odd, as I have rights to that photo sold to me by am (the guy who took it) and I don't recall saying that they could use it. did am atleast get the credit?

Howdy Kent,

Nope, that wasn't one of my photos .

I went ahead and ordered a short stack of that book. I'll bring them to the next SBCK meeting just in case anyone wants to buy one there.

Hey Dave,

If I remember correctly I thought your contributions were going to be parasites? The credits in the book are for some feeders and the old Oustalet's pic. The probability that a layout person may have taken some liberties really shouldn't detract from the usefulness of the book, tho.
