The Next Frontier?

Further to my last,

I didn’t say love was not an emotion, I simply said that there are a number of other definitions of ‘love’. Personally, I’d argue for inclusion: love between people means x, love between dolphins means y, love between species means z.

I interpreted your comment that love was not “merely an emotion” but something more complex - which is true - as you saying its not an emotion (which it is not). I agree love is something you feel pretty strongly, but its definitely the most complicated thing we feel!

To answer another question you posted, how do we define emotion... there are (surprisingly) differing definitions on it. The general gist though is a feeling that you have a measurable reaction to / expression of. Some go so far as to say a facial expression to, but I think thats a little too narrow. Thats my interpretation of emotion.

Thats also where my semantics comment comes into play. I think most everyone is defining emotion differently.

Interesting points! What I was trying to get at was that there are some heated opinions here, and it’s not entirely clear that everyone is talking about the same thing. I have very little faith that most people can spell out what they mean when they use terms such as ‘love’. And, I’ve always found that when asked to spell it out, they are forced to accept that they don’t know exactly what they mean. And, for the intrepid, this will prompt further inquiry. Which, most often, produces growth

Omg, I need to pay attention to who’s actually posting. Sorry, as usual, I’m loaded. For both beman and mrs. Wilkins: I have nothing but respect, I have a potty mouth, and I’m almost always drunk. Love!
You can call me Kristen ;) . I am owned by Craig Wilkins but we just go by Craig and Kristen lol .

Pure projection, plain and simple. They are so deeply engrained in us its unpleasant to accept that the creatures we are so passionate about are not capable of reciprocating those same feelings. Humans are social animals so that's our natural default position, the idea that some animals don't experience the world the same we do is an alien concept.

This a million percent. Not much else I can add to that.

I don't get it though, I have no problem with knowing my cham doesn't love me. I love reptiles for what they are, if they were more people-like, maybe I wouldn't be so fond of them? Haha.

There are so many cool things about the world, everything doesn't have to be familiar to us humans to appreciate it. I don't have a problem with people loving their reptiles and imagining they are people too, but I don't like when those same people often say that us more logical types don't love our animals because we don't see them as we see ourselves(this was a common comment made to me way back, a couple years ago, when there was an uproar over this same subject... not saying anyone did here). Check out my enclosures, my experience, and my dedication to this hobby. My animals and even my feeders get plenty of love.
