The problem with free range....

I never compared Triton to having the personalty of a dog or cat or that the feels love and affection toward me. He seems interested in his environment and there are things that he seems to like doing...the reason I know this is because he has repetitive behavior and does the same things pretty consistently. Why he does that I'll never know. But, I do know that they are intelligent creatures. He knows his way around the house very well and knows how to get back to his free range area on his own when he wants something. He does recognize me and likes to get on me. Whatever you want to call it...just instinct, like, habit...who knows what chams are really thinking when they do what they do?? But they must be thinking something.

That post was in response to DJ Richey Rich, not you.

Is that the only insect provided? What are they gutloaded on? And if you don't mind me asking how are you free ranging crickets for him to hunt while he is outside of a cage without getting tons of cricket escapees around your house?

Sorry, I know how to gut load crickets...so I really don't have to go into that in this tread...and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to put a live cricket on a branch so your cham can chase it down. You have your opinion and I have mine. When you become a veterinarian...(BTW my father is a veterinarian)..then you can criticize my husbandry and the way I feed my cham. Until then step off.

I know mine knows the diffrents from me and someone else if your not me then your going to get a chunk of skin removed from you so that means that it likes me

You can choose not to listen to what I have to say, but your chameleon looks like he has gular edema, which is frequently caused from repetitive or improper gutloads. Do some research on gular edema yourself if you don't believe me.

Hummm now that you mention it it is kind of like a dog besides the barking whats really crazy is that in the wild a chameleon mostly a male will cover a mile as its territory lol if you were a male chameleon how would you expect to mate if you never left your tree. Mine has trees all around the house my female chameleon very rarly leaves her tree but never minds a ride on my shoulder.

I really hope you are kidding about the dog comment

You suggest that I believe one tree is a sufficient free range. My free range looks quite like a jungle actually. The more trees and vines you can provide, the better. My attitude towards free ranging is, putting a tree in a corner with a light does not constitute a "free range". My free range has numerous plants, vines, and misting/drainage system. My chameleons can hide, bask, hunt, interact, explore, or just hang out as much as they want. I am not here to bash others, but I do want to share my experiences that can help others.

Yes, a chameleon is capable of distinguishing between two people and identifying one as the person who brings him food and water, and identifying the other as being someone that is unknown. This also does not mean that he likes you, it only means that he has learned to tolerate, maybe even trust you.

I also did not say chameleons are not capable of having any emotion, only that they are incapable of having some of the emotions you seem to think they have towards you. Please read my posts thoroughly; do not skim through and fill in the blanks with assumptions and then put words into my mouth.

I agree but then there is the diffrents in knowing your not a threat to wanting to interact with you wich mine and some others do on this forum

After seeing pictures of your "free range", I can't blame your cham for wanting to spend time with you... I would get bored with that tree in a corner too!

Mine has several areas also and a continuous drip system and drainage along with numerous plants and vines..I think we're all trying to share experiences which is a good thing. But, there are different ways to care for a cham and works for that particular cham and the household they live in. Just cause it's different doesn't make it wrong...just different.

I have trees all over the house lol too bad my 6'x8' tree is bigger than the room you keep your cham in come on lets see some pics

See...that is just mean. What's the point to that comment?

I never said anything was wrong with the way you free range your chameleon. I don't really know anything about how you do it, so I can't judge it.

I suppose that was a bit mean, but I don't think that people should boast about their "free range" when all they did was put a tree on a dresser in a corner. We all care about chameleon's health and obviously you know that husbandry has a lot to do with that. I am only trying to stop DJ Richey from giving bad advice to others.

Yes there are plenty of different ways to care for a chameleon, that doesn't make them good. If you were yielding good results I wouldn't have opened my mouth about it. I am also not bashing your free range set up, the edema would be caused by something else, and since you don't wish to listen to me, I strongly suggest you do your own research on it and come to your own conclusions.

The point to withlime's 'mean' comment was to make a point. I too, have seen his free range set up and it definitely looks inadequate. Her comment was justified, regardless of if you thought it was rude or mean.
