I have a 3 month old panther who has been sleeping lately with his eye open but it looks like there is something preventing him from closing it (looks like a film is over his eye). When he wakes up he seems fine and both eyes look good but I cant figure out why he has this problem. I'm experienced with chams and ive never seen this before. Thanks for the help!

i have had the same problem with my veiled, i use saline to break it up and clear it gently with a damp paper towel.
i have found that it is cause by a vit a prob, at least with my guy

thanks hoj,

could you clarify for me a little. Im not sure what a "vit a prob" is. Also is this serious condition? should i go to the vet?

well there is alot of discussion on this matter, some chams do not seem to be able to process beta carotene forms of vitamin a, and it can cause many different issues. i am assuming u are using a multivitamin,
fill out the how to ask for help form to we can see what your doing.

male panther chameleon has been in my care for 1 month.
-its still a baby so i dont handle it much but i bring it outside once a week weather permiting
-i feed it crickets about 3 aday usually in the morning
-water twice a day, I also add a little bit of calcium+vit d3 in the water
-I have a humidifier that i use every other day
-fecal matter is half whitish yellow and half brown
-mesh cage with two fake plants that is about 3ft lng. x 1 ft. wide
-Sun light, uvb lights, and a basking lamp
-usually 80 degrees in cage
-humidity is from my humidifier but im going to get a timer and a humidifier gauge to have regular intervals of mist
-cage is 6 ft high in my room
-I live in Grand rapids, MI

I think my chameleon has a vitamin a defficency and is developing crustys in his left eye. Where do I buy vitamin a? Thanks for everything guys!

ok if you have never used a multivitamin it could be a lack of vit a, what tyupe of uvb bulb are you useing.
for suppliments you should be using a plain calcium at most feedings and a calcium w/d3 and a multivitamin twice a month. ( dusting the crickets lightly )
also a young cham will need way more than 3 crickets a day providing they are the right size.
you can get the suppliments at most decent pet stores as well as many of the site sponsors have it for sale.
most members use repcal products i however have been using zoomed suppliments with no problems..
how tall is the cage and where are you measuring the temp at 80 deg
for a baby you prob want 80 to be the hotter part of the cage with a cooler area he can goto if needed.
you are going to want to get a decent digital temp/humidity meter most hardware stores sell cheap ones for about 15.
depending on humidity you may also need to be misting more than twice a day.
