I've seen adult dubias—haven't (yet) seen discoids of any size, except for Wiki. Adults of both species look quite different from the nymphs. Can't say they freak me out any more than a palmetto bug (that literally scared the ? out of me when I was 4
). And at 4, it looked a lot bigger than 1.5", so now I'm not sure it really was a palmetto bug... 
No joke, I saw these monsters in a reptile store and they were easily as big as my hand (THAT'S NOT MY HAND, BTW) ! @RescueMom you echo my sentiments perfectly! (and make me laugh) I’ve had my discoids for maybe 10 months or so now and have yet to touch one or be touched by one. Scoop scissors are my friend.

If that were true, there wouldn't be as many as there are. Schlock is an acquired taste. Not gross-out explicit—that's a different... penchant (which I don't have). I grew up on 1950s science fiction movies. We were doing MST3K before it was a thing—that's just how we watch movies. ?

I've never tried to breed them, and have no plans to. The noise and smell is enough to keep me from buying them, let alone breeding them. Though, I do buy them once in a while just for variety.
