Took Ocelot to the Vet...

Man, that's fine. I'd suggest not asking for advice since obviously have it figured out.

IMO, you felt insecure that your ability to take care of your pets was somehow in question, and this blocks any ability for you to heed any advice here. When ego gets in the way, it makes it impossible to listen. You seem like the expert know it all to me.

Good luck.

duh maybe you should read. the advice on this board is why i took him to the vet...

Well, if you believe he is fine and your vet thinks he's fine but the people here don't think so (some of which actually work with chameleons, as in a job with chameleons) then do what you please. However I would suggest not breeding him until he starts to look a bit more filled out and healthy (more normal I suppose.) How many grams is 3 1/2 onces by the way?

EDIT: how many chams exactly have you kept? I'd imagine if you've kept so many you'd know they don't 'smile' unless something is wrong...

I'm still quite astonished that you truly do believe a reptile..a CHAMELEON, is smiling.

I'm sorry but i do believe this is a clear case of anthropomorphizing.

Regardless if you're determined your cham is healthy, I suggest you get your head out of the clouds and into some good books if you want your cham to "remain healthy."

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics to non-human creatures and beings, phenomena, material states and objects or abstract concepts. Examples include animals and plants and forces of nature such as winds, rain or the sun depicted as creatures with human motivation able to reason and converse. The term derives from the combination of the Greek ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos), "human" and μορφή (morphē), "shape" or "form".

Just in case people wonder

Mudshark,
Your lizard isnt 'terminal' by any means. Everyone here wants all chameleons to live forever going by the intensity of replys. :)
That said, given 25 years plus of reptile experience, I can say three things with confidence.
1. Pinkies are great for building up sick/convalescing animals, or pre/post pregnancy, but otherwise not exactly a healthy food choice being mostly fat & protein. On occasion they wont hurt if fed very sparingly.
2. Chams generally have skinny limbs, but your lizards legs do look a little on the skinny side. Just a tad more meat on him wont hurt.
3. As you probly know, bubbles and gaping are such a common indicator of Respiratory issues, that its not unreasonable as such, for folk to imagine your lizard may be developing one. From all accounts chameleons can 'crash' suddenly and without excessive symtoms, so advice to get a second opinion on that is fair.

None of this in any way indicates anythng negative about you or your care of your lizard, though it may feel that way, Dont take it personally, especially if you read the number of 'sick cham, cham died' type threads regularly posted here.
If your 38 I reckon you had an idea what to expect on an internet forum eh? Seen one, seen em all! Nothing new there.

Do the best you can with it, 'feel' your way, as I did, you'll be fine. Best wishes, JJ
Happy new year :)

Oh, wow. https://www.chameleonforums.com/r-i-p-little-guy-34164/index2.html#post315293

sorry man. I am getting ready too start my venture in breeding. I lost three Chameleons so far and everytime It made me stronger and smarter in my research on these animals. My venture now is to learn what makes our animals sick and how to cure them without high expense costs of Vetranarians that just guess on what is wrong with these animals. Most Vets know very little about reptiles and it is up to us to learn how not just care for but heal these animals. In my area there is not 1 Vet that specializes in Reptiles, and most Vets dont have a clue to anything except cats and dogs! Your animal was beautiful with a very different array of colors, and is a huge loss in the Chameleon loving world. Cheers to the life of your little guy and much luck on your future venture into the world of Chameleons! When I finally start breeding these animals I am going to sell my Chameleons for 40% cheeper to people who have lost a chameleon, as long as the owner was doing everything right and has an adequate cage setup. I know how it feels to be on the end of this loss and the sadness of how I will ever be able to afford another animal at 299.00!

Maybe you could give us some husbandry specs if that is the way you feel. How are you going to fix things with out some critique:confused: It could honestly be as easy as basking site temps and nutrition!!!! If these are not up to par then they could be causing your guy to be underweight and poor nutrition/not being able to digest food properly leads to a lowered immune system which will lead to his possible respiratory infection.

There also comes a time when being nice just does not work. There have been many attempts to be respectful to you while trying to get some answers and suggest help. If you do not find out and change what is going on you will with no doubt kill another one with poor husbandry. 3 chams already suggest you are not providing it with everything it needs. Its your choice. Help us help you or watch yet another chameleon die in your hands.

I love you Kent!

Thanks for the chuckle this morning Kent. I was thinking about your comment yesterday about not trying to help people anymore because this is what always happens. I was going to respond to that this morning before I saw your recent post. I've already given up on this guy's attitude too but kept posting my thoughts because several other people are learning from it. They wanted to know what we were basing our opinion on. This guy may not get it, but plenty of others will. They will examine the pictures on that other thread and look at the Avatar picture with the thin head and sunken casque and get it.

I wish I had a dollar for every person that thought they could make actual business "profit" selling chameleons. And in this case he needs to figure out how to get them to actually live and thrive first. And get a vet that knows how to treat reptiles!

I'm a little worried about this breeding venture. I completely understand that sometimes you lose an animal from unforseen circumstances or dificult to diagnose diseases, but to lose several chameleons and have this one not looking very well... I'm thinking breeding should be the last thing on your mind. Sick parents = sick/dead babies.

im glad this thread blew up into discussion. people have answerd every bit of info that was needed for ocelot. i dont think anymore needs to be said....but more pictures of ocelot / videos will help.to make it clear. NOT ALL VETS ARE QUALIFIED FOR CHAMELEON CARE. alot have no idea how to take care of these exotic animals. or how to sugest treatment....one near me said feeding pinkies was good for them wen thast a farse. PINKIES ARE GOOD for weight gain. they have bearly any nutritional value. (my vet said they were good for calcium and vitamins) but rong.....there all fat....he was sugesting one a week as a treat......good god....my cham would wiegh 50 lbs o_O!....so i will not be going to him again.....he also tried to literly "pet" my chameleon....i was like WTF yeah your not a good vet right there....

UHHHHHH........No:confused: Actually not much has been answered at all. There is no information given for anything to be answered. Unless I am missing somthing here:confused: Which is a damn shame! There are two keepers who are trying to help him who have an abundance of chameleon experience with many different species and also others who have a good understanding and some experience, instead of the normal kids who want to post on everythread saying, I agree with so and so or I saw this in another post so I will just repeat it. Which is quite annoying if you ask me:)

well from simple pictures we can only atempt to diagnose.....he seems defensive about the hole vet situation.....so we are at a stalemate....nothing we say is going to change his mind....hes been defending through all of this. i didnt mean that the probelm was resolved....im just saying were not getting anywhere.

Yeah I lost three Vields that I bought from petco years ago. 1 died of Cancer it had a tumor on his ribs, another my friend was gonna watch for me when I got back surgury and she went to the store before home and left it in the car and it died of sunstroke, the first one I bought had calcium deficiancy when I bought it from some kid and I was trying to care him back to health, well he fell into the bottom of the waterfall in which I have a rock so they can climb out and not drowned, but his head went under water and his legs were not strong or straight enough to get himself out.

Okay, well the last death was indeed because of poor husbadry... So I don't get what you're saying there. The first death may not have been your fault, but you left the second one in the hands of some one who didn't have the common sense to take a chameleon out of a hot car (would they have left your child there too?) What exactly are you trying to prove?

Why is it such a hard thing for you to take it to another vet? It would make everyone else happy, and it won't hurt your Cham because he can have a 'fun' car ride.

....whyd you have a waterfall?( EVIL!!!)....that is all. im not here to pick on you....but take em to another vet that has experiance with chameleons...call around.

ok i figure as much i dont have to explain myself....there are COUNTLESS threads about waterfalls....we all know the workings of why not to use em. i didnt feel i had to explain myself......but hear...my gosh...waterfalls can cause bacterial growth...water thats unclean if not changed out periodicaly...chams tend to leave fecal in water. ( therefore cause evil bacteria!!!muaahh!)...and drownding.....................happy?....were all telling him the same thing....take ocelot to another vet!
