Translucent-calyptratus?

they are genetic defect just like albinism. and it is not dominant it is a recessive trait just if you breed to thing with that recessive trait you will have that recessive trait. i just think chameleon look best normal. the question is how did that trait come about?

Not morphs

While I am not a genetic specialist, I do know that leucism is an inherited chromatophore (pigment cells) defect. Simply put, the body surface, or the portion of the body surface which is leucistic, lacks the cells that produce pigmentation. Leucistic animals lack the 3 types of mature pigment cells...namely malanophores (they synthasize melanin, the black and brown pigment cells), xanthrophores (the chromatophores responsible for yellow, red and variations thereof), and iridophores (these cells reflect and refract colors)
Those chams are not "morphs" and yes, it IS an inherited defect. They are the product of mass interbreeding, so certainly the gene pool has to be weakened.

I think Tyler said it best, "They're fragile enough when they're not retarted." LMAO Tyler, very good! Nope, not much market for a retarded cham.

To get this "Flaw(if you will)" and succesfully keep breeding it, you would have to have Homozygus Pairs (aa, aa). The only way this happens is imbreeding. That is the other reason whole clutches are this way. By breeding a homozygus pair you always get what the parents were(to get a "aa" offspring you have to breed "aa,aa"). A heterozygus pair (Aa, Bb) you have multiple possibilitys of genetic configurations in the offspring (AB, Ab, BA, Ba, ab, ba). Capital letters are dominant traits, thats why you wont see "aB" for example. Just a little genetics for you guys.

LOL Michele! Ok, so they aren't freaking retarded..."special" (as you prefer) in a freakish way perhaps?

And thank you, Jenna....
maybe you'd better change your sig from "something special" to "something spectacular"! LOL

Veild chameleons

Hi,
Just a little FYI most of you dont know what you are talking about and are just making asumptions. They are not retarded or genetically defected.Has no one ever seen a pied ball python? It is the same thing just with a chameleon.Alot of people are scared of something new but these guys are here to stay.

It says in the ad "THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE US." Plus the site that Heika posted was in another language. Does that mean that this "trait" is common overseas?

Veilds

Hi,
They have not been for sale to the public in the US before. The add on Kingsnake was a guy from Germany. They are not common but are being breed and sold in Europe and Japan.

any change in an animals normal pattern is a genetic defect in the animal it alters there ability to camoflage makeing it vulnerable to predator. pied balls are a geneticly altered morph.

You're right. They are not retarded, or "special" in terms of brain function. :)
However, they are genetically defected. The white patches of a pied ball python (or more commonly seen in CB birds) is the result of hypopigentism, not leucism. A pied ball python is not leucistic. Those chams are both leucistic (translucent) and pied (white), the result of inbreeding recessive genes.

Hi,
I admit that it is quite weird to have three different morphs on one chameleons. They were not inbreed.Inbreed chameleons would have alot more problems and be dead before it ever got to soemthing like this. This is f3 generation and they are all doing fine.Their has been no oroblem with any of the babies from any of the generations.

It just makes me sick to look at them. I keep wanting to not look at these posting as they progress but I just cannot stop myself. I think those poor chameleons need to be put to sleep. Any one who would pay any amount of money for those things are the retards not the chameleons. I would put down the whole clutch if my chameleon had those. They cannot live a good life like they are and keeping them alive is just torture.

Alright, alright. After a long discussion with some folks about these ugly chameleons, I agree that I am talking out the wrong end here. In my opinion, they are really, really ugly. But that doesn't mean they are defective. Only time will tell if they are affected by UVB any differently than other chameleons. I would really like to hear more about them on a scientific level. I *promise* to keep an open mind and not ridicule anyone silly enough to spend the money on these mangy looking things.:D

Hi,
Do you not understand their is nothing wrong with them?It is the same as anyother chameleon. They do not have any health problems of any kind. Are you saying that all the luesistic ball pythons should be put down?

can anyone find the true history of how these came about. there had to have been some slight inbreeding to get them just like other morph if you start out with just one animal how are you going to get more of that animal with out it. it can take several years just to get that phase and then you have to keep it going some how. find out there history
