Update On Houdini

Hi
Just a quick update for those that are interested, I posted several days back about my Veiled named Houdini, he had broken his right back leg, and was looking at surgery today, the Vet called me on Monday and said that she had consulted with a Vet at the U.of I. and had decided to try a traction splint instead of surgery, the splint was placed on him this morning, he seems to be doing fine with it so far, his leg is almost imobilized. he still has grasping use of the foot but he can not really move his leg to use it, I need to keep an eye his leg for swelling today and need to make sure he has good grasp with his foot, she thinks it should heal in about 3 months and wants to see him back in two months barring any issues. I am glad he was able to avoid surgery, the Vet noticed a bruise on his right heel, this I as first suspected leads me to believe he got his foot caught possibly between some limbs in his cage, or in the branches of his one of his plants, I am hoping the splint is succesful....

Avoiding surgery is always a good thing. Chances are the fracture will heal OK as long as he's healthy. I'd suggest checking over your husbandry to make sure he's getting good groceries and ruling out the possibility that his fracture was the result of a nutritional deficiency.

You may want to make sure there are some towels or something soft to land on just in case he falls while getting used to the splint. Love to see how this works out. Hope for a speedy recovery! ;)

Thanks for the advice, I got him when he was 3 months old I have had him now for 5 yrs, I am really focused on his husbandry, the Vet has worked with Chameleons and ask me a lot of detailed questions on his set up , supplementation, humidity, gut loading, what types lighting, temp gradients in his cage, feeders, feeding schedules cleaning schedules and what type of cage he is in, I was glad she ask these questions, I did have him weighed during his first visit, he came in at 315 grams.

Aww, I am so sorry to hear about the injury of your cham. I hope he gets better. Just make sure to keep an eye on him and make him feel comfortable :)

Sounds like you have the right vet!!! You may want to share the location and name on the forum if they are this knowledgeable with chameleons! :)

Happy to hear that surgery may not have to be, good news there.....wishing the best for you and your cham, you seem to have a good knowledge of these creatures so I'm sure he is in great hands and the best will happen.
