Update on Specs's condition :/

If anyone hasn't seen my previous thread on Specs with the health form:

https://www.chameleonforums.com/specs-seems-going-downhill-please-help-80665/

Well, Ive been observing Specs more closely over the past few days. Ive noticed that it really is mostly his back legs that he doesn't use as much. Ive watched closely and tested, and his front hands seem to have a decent grip, while his back just kinda barely try sometimes.

I noticed that he tends to just hang onto branches with his front legs for a while, with one or both back legs just dangling. Also, he really doesn't move around in his cage very much. He sorta either just awkwardly hangs for long periods of time or rests on a branch for a while. It could be normal though, because since he is my first cham, I dont know how often a cham should normally move around in its cage. When he does move, it kind of looks like his belly is dragging, which is why I thought that maybe he was just overweight.

When I put the feeding cup in his cage, he doesn't look very enthusiastic about it. He wont head toward the cup until a while later (and he'll be fairly slow and clumsy getting there) so I usually just put it right up to him so he can eat. The same goes for the dripping water. He wont normally go to the spot where its dripping at, so I'll usually pick him up and place him there.
He is still falling a bit, and I notice that at night, he falls in his sleep a lot. Also, he used to move to a spot or get more comfortable and curl his tail up all the way when he slept. He no longer does that. Now when he sleeps, he just kinda... awkwardly hangs there, or doesn't move and falls asleep right where hes at. :( As a matter of fact, I think he is using his tail less and less too along with his back legs. I did notice though that sometimes he'll have good days, and sometimes he'll have bad days. Like right now, hes basking under his light and he seems okay.. but earlier this morning he fell.

I tried having him outside in the sun for about two days. It seemed to work alright, but the several times I went out to check on him, feed him, etc, I'd often find him on the bottom of his cage as if he had just fallen. :/ Also, I notice that, usually when he falls, he'll sometimes make little effort to get back up. He'll just stay in the fallen position for a while even if he falls in shallow water. Im really starting to get worried...

I have two videos of him being clumsy, half falling, not using his back legs, and awkwardly hanging there if it can help anyone tell me for sure if this is MBD.. I tried to help him up at the end of the second vid :( :

But I cant get to a vet right now with no car... are there any home remedies or anything I could do at all for this?

Other things that Ive noticed about him, although I dont know if this would portray to the major problem: the back half of his body seems a little... discolored. After his last shed, the white vertical stripe seems to go from bright white from the front of his body to a brownish on the second half. Other than the stripe though, it seems alright. I should probably wait until his next shed to be concerned though.
Another thing, yesterday I noticed an air pocket or something on either sides of his head... it almost looked as if he got that from being fired up and having his little throat pouch get puffed up, but I dont know. I didnt see it today so I suppose its nothing to worry about. And lastly.. he tends to bulge his eyes at random. It just lasts half a second and goes back to normal. Hes done this since he was a lot younger though, so I thought maybe it just meant he was "cleaning" his eyes or something. Just wanted to be sure.

Bumping this up in hopes you can get some answers...

He doesn't look like he has MBD to me...Is there anyway someone could give you a ride to the vet.?

There is something definitely wrong with your chameleon and I would say that it is serious enough for you to call someone to get a ride to the vet. We cannot say with any certainty what is wrong over the internet. Please take him to the vet.

Really hoping you got your guy to the vet!! Those videos are horrible, poor thing!! Please let us know how things are going!!

Is it really that bad??

Ive checked, and no one seems to be available to bring me.. I really dont know many people to begin with. Besides that, I dont think I could even afford a vet bill worth hundreds of dollars right now.. :(

If you can't take him to the vet to get him much needed care, would you be willing to give him to a vet who will care for him? You will NOT get the chameleon back. If the chameleon recovers he will still spend his life with the vet.

I can arrange this but it is up to you. The vet won't buy him but he will take him and care for him. PM me if you want more information. That cham needs a vet of it will continue to a slow painful death.jmo

Wow, I feel so bad for this cham :(

OP, I would very seriously consider the offer made by laurie... At this point with your lack of transportation/funds to give him proper attention, this is pretty much the only option left. It would be very selfish not to. I hope I don't offend you. Just looking out for the cham...

Oh poor little guy!
I do hope you can get him the care he needs. This is something that a vet definitely needs to see and care for. I am so sorry... but you little guy really needs help.

Man... this is killing me. :( Its such a tough decision... although, at the same time, it really isn't because I know whats best for him...

Just hold that thought, please. I still have a few more acquaintances I can check up on before I officially decide to give him up completely.

I have a very important question though. Does anyone on here have at least a general estimate of what the vet bill could be? For just a checkup, or for vaccines, any of it? I need to know. I can try to scrounge for money or borrow some if necessary. Ill do whatever it takes to save Specs and to still be able to keep him..

Vets vary a lot. Given the problem, maybe the vet would work with you and let you make payments. No idea of cost until you know what is wrong. Sorry.

Man. I really dont know how expensive a reptile vet could be. :/ I'd expect it to be in the hundreds, though, considering its exotic...

I guess im going to have to call around and get some information. :/

yeah, I am sure of that. My vet charges $50.00 for a visit, $17.00 for fecal floats and then whatever else your cham might need. I think $50 is reasonable for the office visit but I don't know what they charge in your area.

you will be in the hundreds for sure it will be minimum like 55 for just the appointment thats a low low ball i pay 75 for exam and tax it ends up like 81 bucks or so that is with no treatment.

wow thats cheap i pay 27 for fecals. i guess it really does vary:eek:

Around $50 for JUST a visit? Dang... :(

What about having bloodwork done? Could anyone give me the price they've been charged for that so I could get an estimate? I have a feeling I would need to get that done.

Why don't you call the vets office and talk to them. no one on this forum can give you the answers you're looking for, only the vet you plan to see. My vets exam is like $72, and then any little thing they do is more. If your cham needs meds or more you'll be looking into the hundreds of dollars. You won't know what the cost will be and whether the vet will work with you on payments until you talk to them. I hope your cham gets well.

You just need to call the vet you plan on working with. I am a vet tech and I have worked at multiple clinics...everyone is different. Even for dogs/cats typical bloodwork runs anywhere from $80 -$130, and for exotics it will probably be more because most clinics are not set up to run the blood in house, it may need to be sent out. X-rays which I would HIGHLY suspect need to be done are going to be in the range of $50 for 1 view to $130 for 2 views. Your cham is not doing well, being basically paralyzed in the back end is not typical of anything easy to fix with at home remedies. I think if the $$$ is that big of a concern, you really need to discuss with Laurie the offer to give him up.

Honestly, even if you can get the money together for an initial visit, he is going to need follow up care which is also going to cost money. I will also tell you MOST vets are not going to allow you to walk in with little to no money, do hundreds of dollars of work up and trust you to make payments. Every vet out there has been screwed over so much by the "please help my pet and I PROMISE to pay you" so unfortunately, it is just not a reality anymore. Again, you can't walk into a grocery store with no money and get food, why everyone expects to get vet care for free I don't know.

I am sorry and this whole thing really sucks, I am devastated for you. I hope somehow this works out for you and more importantly the cham. In the future I hope medical care is something you will plan for when deciding on getting a pet. :(

ok when my dog needed vet care (he drank bleach from a mop bucket) i didnt have the 650 cash right up front i didnt get paid for another week so they let me sign up for a care credit card that works at vet offices. maybe you can go this route i dont know how your credit is and how much they will give u but i know u dont have to pay anything up front if u use this card. just something for you to consider! hope he gets better.

I'm so sorry to see your guy so sick. Top differentials right now would certainly be nutritional/UVB, spinal trauma from falling (note the developing caudal color change), parasitic or viral/bacterial.

If you had come to my relatively inexpensive practice in NY I would have suggested diagnostics of a chem/CBC (which costs more than a dogs or cats does, FYI), 2 x-rays, and a fecal. You would have gotten out of there for under $250 that day. Most places will charge more, however.

For posterity--- it's NEVER a good idea to share a cage with a wild-caught; fecal be damned. Not only do they vary wildly with accuracy, there's many parasites that won't be picked up on standard preps, and there's still no telling what virus or bacteria may have been exchanged. I know you said his signs began prior, but I promise it didn't help him if he were then additionally exposed to yet another disease.

All together now--- a vet visit is a must if you want to save him. And I'm not sure where the vet is that the moderator mentioned, but this vet in Florida would be willing to rehome him as well.

P.s.-notice the weakness in his tail as well
