Vegan.

As some of you may know, I am a vegetarian and I have been one for the past year and some odd months. Lately, I have been not so into dairy and eggs and any animal product in my food. I want to become a Vegan for the past month or so, but it's kind of hard to find vegan related food in my area, but I can talk to my head boss, (I work at Hy-Vee a grocery store) to get in more vegetarian and vegan food rather than the Boca and Morning Star brand frozen burgers etc. I went to Trader Joes in Minneapolis/St. Paul area over Thanksgiving break and loaded up on vegan foods. I do this everytime I go over to visit family. But there isn't anything like that in South Dakota.. So if anyone on here is a vegan or knows any information on them.

Thanks,
Zac

My wife is a vegan! I try, but I still love sweet baked goods, and I have occasional cravings for meat. Overall, I am still doing quite well. Best of Luck to you!

Great Cook book Vegan cooking for one by Leah Leneman

Gives grocery list for the weekly menus, at weeks end food is used up. It is also separated by in season foods.

This book was what I used in the beginning when my daughter went vegan-

Good Luck :)

Thanks! It's a start for you! I love cheese, and it kills me when I go back to Wisconsin since we visit Bass Lake Cheese Factory.. Constipation Heaven right there! :p haha.

I think I have a book similar to that, called "The Gradual Vegetarian" by Lisa Tracy. I'll have to look on Amazon for that! Thanks for the help you two! I'm happy I didn't get a "PETA = P.eople E.at T.asty A.nimals... I hate when people use that.. It's annoying and childish.. I am no PETA fan and never will be. They are morons.

Exactly why I want to become a vegan. tkilgour if your wife has any input that would be great! I know of where i can get vegan shoes, but not vegan clothes. O:

I have been a vegetarian my whole life. At times I have been vegan and try more and more to go that way. It is hard and I would say the two things that get me is cheese and ice cream. Without those two I would happily be a vegan the rest of my life :D. My wife even has a blog all about vegetarian cooking but makes most things on the site vegan. Her site it http://easyvegetariancuisine.blogspot.com/ And I will tell you the things on that site are AMAZING!!

Read the labels buying something labelled vegan ups the price. Many items are made without animal products/help.

Cotton is one, man made materials etc

in foods watch for whey, honey and tricky little food coloring called carmine. It is a bug they squish up for red- many non vegan yogurts have it.

For a number of years before I went back to school to become a dentist I did medical research. One of the studies I worked on was looking specifically at Prostate Cancer. We found that the only populations in the world that didn't have prostate cancer were areas where the population was vegetarian with a high soy diet. There were 4 such populations in the world. In contrast looking at a population in Detroit where there was a VERY high meat intake 99% of autopsies on people over 25 y/o showed at least beginning stages of prostate cancer. The doctor that was doing this study was a meat eater and could not remember a meal that he hadn't had some form of meat. Unfortunately he died of a heart attack before the study was ever published.

That's so gross. I am giong to become a Vegan after the holidays. New years resolution! ;D

Any other tips?

I'll ask my daughter what she used in the beginning to help her understand the new life style. I will let you know. She is the vegan and these were just off the top of my head in what I do when shopping for her. Also when cooking for her.

When she is home from college I do cook vegan and we do not starve but once she leaves I will say a steak does hit the grill

Yeah and I have found it in a lot of other foods and I won't buy them since I found out it is bug juice...ignorance on this ingredient was bliss :(

Being a vegan is incredibly difficult. It's pretty difficult to actually figure out what foods have animals parts in them since the makers dont have to put certain things on their labels. Like sugar. A lot of sugars have cow bones or something along those lines in them/used in the process of making them. Make sure to seriously do your research if you plan to become a strict vegan!

The veggies and fruits at grocery stores aren't always picked when they are ripe because they have to make the journey to the store (dehydrated and freeze dried foods are pretty awesome when in comes to retaining the nutrients because they are picked at prime ripeness. In addition to other stuff as fresh as possible of course.) Make sure you eat as much safe and healthy raw food as possible.

I know this is a little TMI, but I want to warn you that sometimes, when people start eating mostly raw foods, the fiber can sometimes cause certain unwanted potty issues. In other words, have a bathroom close by at all times for the beginning. I'm talking up to 5+ times a day for some people. Most people are never warned at the beginning and that's not fun.

I wouldn't ever become a vegan unless I ate unprocessed and raw foods only. That would mean no (or extremely minimal) grains. That is incredibly difficult though.

PS, I'd rather eat certain bugs than a lot of the processed foods out there. I became incredibly aware of all the crap in foods when I was put on a medication that makes me crave sugary, starchy, super carby foods. Now I eat lettuce with everything to fill up so I'm too full to try to eat the bad, but wonderfully delicious, foods.

Thanks so much pssh. I never would have thought about that. I will be researching it for the next month and I find that I can actually do it, than I will become a vegan, but if not I will stick with being a vegetarian until later on in my life.

Sure thing. Just giving you some places to start and to look into! One of my cousins is a hardcore vegan and she's always telling me things about it and trying to convince me to become a vegan. It's very interesting stuff to research!

One of my best friends was a vegetarian for about 6+ years then went vegan. I'm glad to have help and support, even though it's not locally. :)

You guys have determination! I couldn't not eat meat and dairy, we owe our brain's size and capacity to a high-protein diet; my mother always said that when she and her friends tried being vegetarians that they felt really slow and dull. My boyfriend says the same thing about when he tried it, that he felt he was running at half capacity. My one vegan friend is useless at arguments, he can't keep up. Our brains need a lot of animal protein to function. I imagine to really make the switch you might have to wean off really slowly? Maybe over enough time your system could really adapt to it properly.

Good luck to all of you though!

I do not believe this was from being veggie or vegan

My daughter is Vegan, Usually carries 19 credits- Deans list
President of her Hall
Numerous clubs and usually has a governing position
works 20 hours a week

Another one is a full time HS special Ed teacher, has a landscaping/snowplowing Business he either does before or after school and is remodeling his house.

Another is a (Forgot the proper name) camera person on movie sets. She handles the cameras, the boards to reflect the lighting, the wind
she works very long days when filming and heavy work. Also a marathon runner

I can go on but I think I made my point. Yes we need protein does not need to be animal protein. Every person can have a bad diet and be sluggish.
You have to eat smart and healthy no matter what your life style is.

For the record- I eat everything except organs.Nope not touching those!
