veil cham acts weird

GET RID OF THAT, it will make her blind, this is the reason shes rubbing her eyes

As far as I know there has not been a problem with the Reptisun compacts and those bulbs that did have problems were older and are most likely off the market. Many people, including some of the experts here, use compact UVBs for their chameleons. It's inappropriate to post scary claims when you don't know what you are talking about.

That said, I'll agree that the enclosure is too hot and I don't think there's any need for a bulb of any kind. A cool dark night is good for a chameleon. If it got below 55 or so in the house at night, I'd consider adding some heat, but it would not be heat that's attached to a light source.

I thank everyone for the help again. And I trusted this pet store guy cause he seemed to know and is the owner and has reptiles at his house. And as the meal worms go I only started a few days ago and she only had two so there's no problem there

While it's easy to forget, most people here have learned that some or all of what the pet store told us is questionable.

Chameleons are particularly delicate and "odd" in the reptile world, so someone who's kept even hundreds of snakes and desert lizards might not have a clue on how to keep a chameleon.

How is she doing?

TOo Hot, too hhot!!!! keep high temp to 80-85 max, everywhere down to 70-75.

lighting- get reptisun or repti glow 5.0(linear tube, not coil/compact- blinds them or other eye probs, the2.0 mght be too weak. get basking light use a regualr hardware bulb about 60 watts( the red bulb is bad for them, can cause eye probs, they sleep at night so everything goes off, get digigtal thermometer, and hydrometer....need more live plants, probably bigger cage

good thing you are doing is watering her, dripper and misting, feeding is okay....have you tried supplements????

hopefully moe poeple can chime in to help you more:)

I thought Veiled Chameleons liked their basking temperature around 90 degrees. Panthers on the other hand are around 85 degrees. But I will agree that the ambient temperature should be a bit lower. I know its Hot in some places right now. And in nature they could even see some temperature spikes of around 110 ouch that Hot.

Yes, adult male veileds can have a basking temp at 95 degrees.

yeah for a male , but this is a female , and high temps cause bigger clutches of egglaying and might lead to eggbound ,and might lead to shorter life span....for a male veiled its ok:)

You said its a repti glo 2.0 uvb compact? Some compacts have caused eye issues. If you changed it for a few days you should see an improvement if the light is what is causing the issue.

Well last night I took the light off her and she seems to be back to normal. She walks around with both eyes open and I saw her drinking. Seems like the light was the problem.

figured it out. Can anyone tell me what this looks like? infection or blinded by the compact light?

When did she start closing her eyes again?

Also, unless I just missed it, we didn't get your supplementation schedule, that would probably be very useful (some supplementation issues can affect eyes, I don't know if it would present this way but why not get the info?).

Maybe it is a late reaction but can it be that the problem is that the light is not properly burnt in -gosh i don't know if that's the right English word for what i mean haha -? I use a Zoomed Reptisun 5.0 but the manual has specific warning about using the light the first 24 hours. You really have to use it this first 24 hours without an animal present. Then it is safe to use in the enclosure.
So because the lighting is to strong the first 24 or more hours it can be that she has sunburnt eyes.

supplements are- Rep cal calcium without d3 and multivitamins. Im waiting for the d3 to come in and that doesnt seem much of an issue cause you rarely use this right? Once or twice a month i hear. As far as i use it... my pet store was out for a week.. I haven't used anything for a about 10 days or so, but im using the cal w/o d3 every feeding pretty much and multivitamins once so far.

Her eyes have been closed entirely for one day and the past two its been open and closed, or one open one closed. 3 total days. And the light has been taken away the first day i saw her eyes closed, but they may still be hurting her.

Anyone think that without calcium for 10 days is a problem? I only have one pet store that carries these so I had to wait.

That sounds good, but wait for someone with more expertise to confirm it. If you have calcium without d/3, I think you should be giving her that at pretty much every feeding, even now.

Do you have a vet who is familiar with chameleons? It might be advisable to make an appointment.

If this were my animal, I'd be misting more often and for longer to see if that makes her more comfortable.

not sure if any vets around me are good with chameleons but i can do some research.

I have been misting her a good amount now but she hates the water hitting her. And i tried giving her a shower, but she freaks out

I found mine really hates it if I spray him directly (think the wicked witch of the west) but is more tolerant if I spray the top of the cage and let water drip down on him. Doing that, I can get him quite wet (drinking and cleaning out his eyes) without feeling like I'm torturing him. You sort of have to hit it at an angle to get the effect.

My first chameleon walked around like that with his eyes closed. Due to faulty advice from the petstore he had given me a damaging light that caused that and I was not aware that the light was wrong for the chameleon. It only took one day for the cham to get like that too. Get him to the vet, look up exotic vets in your area on the net. Most exotic vets should be able to handle a lizard and diagnose the problem with your cham.

I guess pet store workers told me the wrong lighting stuff than.. when i went to buy the lights I forgot to bring the info on which ones so I just asked. And the cage is for now I'm getting one a lot bigger with more live plants. And I did think it was that infection. Is there any thing I can give her

never trust a pet shop worker UNLESS they know what there talking about. PLus always look the stuff up on the web to make sure the person is right before buying it. Them compact UVB bulbs are bad and can cause eye problems.

change the uvb bulb out, and get the temp lower. See if this helps any, if so than your safe, but if he still acts sick you need to find a vet. They can give you meds to help.

I unknowing used a compact light for the first four months I had my veiled... fortunately I didn't have any problems. I new to Chameleons, but have researched a ton of info and I agree you could have a problem with the light so if possible I think it would be better to replace it. Also, the misting is important! Did you try to put her in the shower on a plant? If possible try to put half the plant in a 'fine' warm mist and the other half out of the mist. Place you cham on the dry part of the plant and give him/her some time to adjust. My veil didn't like it at first, but after a while she would move over to the mist side and she loved it. Keep an eye on the temp to make sure the water doesn't get to hot or cold.

Also, I didn't see the earlier, but what type of cage do you have? (Glass or screen)
