Veiled Cham misfiring when hand feeding...

Hey Guys,

I noticed that when hand feeding my Veiled, i'll have a worm in the palm of my hand, but he keeps striking my fingertips, then i'll get closer and he'll connect to the center of my palm. When feeding from feeder dish, or hunting he is 100% accurate. This is a chameleon I found in my yard, so not sure its history with hand feeding.

Anyone ever witness something like this?

Yeah, it’s all good if the chameleon is healthy, my veiled does that sometimes, I even tried just showing him my fingers and he would go for them. Just one thing.. he’s wild chameleon so you should check for parasites and you should check your husbandry here. I will post the form and you just fill it up and post it back in this thread okay? Chameleon Info:

• Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
• Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
• Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
• Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
• Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
• Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
• History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:

• Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
• Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
• Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
• Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
• Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
• Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
• Location - Where are you geographically located?

Ok good to know, others do that, must be instinctual... I don't believe he is a "wild" Chameleon, i'm in southern california, I believe he was a neighbors pet, or let loose. All other signs point to healthy

Make sure you have the correct supplementation and UVB lighting. Issues with hitting targets can be directly related to this. Try feeder on the fingers instead of the palm of your hand. He may be targeting the fingers because they move or it may be a health issue.

How long have you had it in captivity? Do you keep it indoors or outside?

About 3 weeks now, currently indoors, but trying to get together an outdoor also, i'm in southern california.

Well when my hand isn't in the enclosure he hunts and feeds from feeder 100% accuracy. its something about my fingertips vs. palms when at a distance

I had a chameleon who did this....

What's your relative humidity in your house?

What's your insect choice?

What's your gut loading system?

Just be careful here... 4 months after I first noticed mine missing he started to go downhill fast and never recovered unfortunately.
