Veiled Help :( Tongue Hanging Out, Swelling

I have a year old female Veiled Chameleon. On Wednesday I noticed she wouldn't close her mouth. I thought she was dehydrated so I checked on the misting and sprayed her a few times, she drank just fine. On Thursday the gumline around was swollen outwards. I immediately made a vet appointment.

On Friday morning we went to the vet and she said there was no infection, just swelling and it was due to not getting enough calcium. Other than the swelling, the vet said she was in great health and looked good. She wasn't dehydrated either. I just need to up the calcium intake.

She was given a vitamin shot and I have antibiotic drops to give her once a day. (Baytril is the name of the drops.) Before the vet visit the ONLY problem was the gumline swelling. She had great strength and was acting, otherwise, fine Now her tongue was in her mouth but sticking out a little bit due to the swelling...as shown in the pictures.

Today unfortunately she has gone down hill!! The gumline is still swollen, but now she's dropping her tongue out! And she has very little strength. She dropped from one branch to another in her cage. :( Is this due to stress from the vet visit or is something worse going on? The tongue was just hanging and she was able to pull it back into her mouth, very slowly. The entire tongue has been dropping out though, not just that one bit in the pics.

I already left a message for our vet and am waiting for a call back, but I'd appreciate any insight. I don't want to lose my little girl. :( I tried to get pictures from various angles...

Wow... All I think you could do would be another vet visit maybe. Sounds like she may be responding negatively to the Antibiotics? How reputable is your vet at dealing with herps, or Chameleons specifically? I don't know to much about this stuff(Baytril), maybe somebody more knowledgeable will chime in.

EDIT: Just saw the pics... poor girl... I have never seen anything like that. I would be running to the Vet again.

She is a great vet, specializes in herps and has dealt with chameleons before, I made sure to ask before I made the appointment. I've never encounted anything like this before either and I can't find any info regarding similar problems. The actual tongue looks swollen today as well, forgot to mention that in my original post. My thoughts were also a bad reaction to the shot or drops, but yikes... :(

I think Baytril was used for a vit A deficiency in my cham, let me recheck the name.

edit: Yes, it was indeed Baytril.

Either it is the picture or that chameleons is way too small and thin to be a year old. Poor thing that tongue is swollen-I hope she does not suffocate.

She is not normally that thin at all. She was irritated and she like deflates herself and starts swaying. She is smaller for her age, but she was tiniest of the batch when I got her. She's normally much bigger, but I had to pull her out to get pictures and she wasn't a happy camper about that.

Syn, how sure are you Baytril is for vit A deficiency?
Here is a fact about what Baytril do:
http://www.bayerdvm.com/products/baytril/baytril.cfm

I have never heard people prescribing antibiotic for vit A deficiency.

In Starvedgirl's case, I am more inclined that Baytril is given for the swelling tissues to combat infections.

I just returned from Vet visit yesterday, and Baytril is a antibiotic, which is used to combat Bacteria, Viral stuff etc. My Vet advised Vitamin A as help with one of my Chams Eye issues. But Vitamin A is not Baytril. So Baytril cannot be used for Vitamin deficiencies. :)

Edit. As for this Chams Tongue issues? Could there be a chance at an allergic reaction to baytril? as some people are allergic to Penicillin?

Vet told me my chameleon had Vit A deficiency, gave me Baytril.

She told me it was for Vit A. Now I'm beginning to wonder if that vet had a clue what she was talking about, perscribing Baytril for my cham, and telling me to come back for 200$ x-rays. *sigh*..

Yet again I look like an idiot for following a vet's advice.

Titan: I'm allergic to penicillin! Yay?

Hey starvedgirl,

I would keep her tongue moist if you can, but I have not seen this issue before, so I would not know where to begin, but to hop in my car and head to the vet. You sound like your doing everything you can. If you do decide to get a 2nd vets opinion, I would recommend Dr.Brad Wilson at the Veterinary Clinic West. He is very knowledgeable with chameleons, and has surgical experience with them... the whole nine yards. I take my animals, there, and he is great. They are located off Whitlock road just before the Marietta square. Their office number is 770-424-5484.

I just wanted to bump this with an update. Lily's swelling has gone down significantly and she is looking MUCH better and acting like herself again. :) No more tongue dropping either. The vet is ordering me a special calcium supplement, so hopefully that comes in soon. I'll update with pictures in a few days.

Question.....

I'm so relieved that her condition has improved. Those pictures were pretty scarey. Out of curiousity....did the vet say why she thought your girl had a calcium deficiency? From what I can see in your pictures her bones looked straight and strong. Was her jaw structure soft (moveable instead of firm and fixed)? Or did something else point to the calcium issue? Did they vet have any idea about why the tongue swelling thing happened? I've heard of calcium issues causing chams to not be able to use their tongue properly, but never about it swelling up like that. It's good for all of us to learn from your experience. Hope your little girl recovers fast :)

advice please
