Veiled Izzy not doing good

So now we have been on these new meds for 2 days...

Good news is that Izzy is not any different than he was once he settle on his new home (a tub?!! c'mon! you can do better than that!??).

He has been eating and moving around. Takes his meds like a big boy... (Not true, it is always something to get his mouth opened! Who said Veileds hiss a lot?!!)

I thought I would add the paperwork I got from the vet showing the diagnosis and the meds...

I should have some zebra silkies coming in tomorrow. Lets see how that's goes. He normally loves them!!!

Ah! I also added a med schedule so 1) I am sure I understood what the vets are talking about, and 2) to make sure I know which one has to be stopped...

I know, I know :rolleyes: ...

seems he and hermie are one in the same ... hermie has kidney problems too!

So i would def. recommend pushing some serious fluids on him. my vet has me give hermie fluids subq (so using a needle and put under his skin) 2-3 times daily for at least a week to (a) make sure he is hydrated while on the antibiotics and (b) flush those kidneys out. i think that we give him like 1-2 mls subq.

hermie hates it but it's really rather easy to do once someone shows you how to do it. Its cheap as well.

oh and yes ... they will learn to stop hissing when you use that as a method to get the meds in them.
 
Its just normasol. So sterile saline ... what they would use for IV fluids for an animal (or human for that matter). It's just to help keep him extra hydrated, since we can't jsut say "drink more, your kidneys need it":rolleyes:

I do think that it's very interesting that we both have veileds that developed MBD rather rapidly ... without any major husbandry issues ... and both have kidney problems.
 
I was just thinking the same thing!!!

Do you think this is genetic? Maybe the breeder inbred too much?

I just bought mine local from a person that is a regular at a trade show... but she did tell me two months ago, she had changed her breeder male and female!? I wasn't experiencing anything then so I didn't ask why...

Another normal day at the Mesnik's hospital. Izzy is packing away his 4 or 5 crickets per day, taking his medicines like... a chameleon would, and it looks like his back feet which were a bit swollen are coming down... or maybe I am getting used to it!?

We got zebra silkies today (first time from Georgia Bugs - give it a try and support our supporters!), so tomorrow he can have a couple of treats.

During his evening soaking, while I was preparing his load of meds, he peeks out like saying: "What the heck?! Get me out of here!!" or perhaps: "Hey! Watch what I can do! And you thought my legs are not working?!!" . So I snapped some shots to share with you folks.


Poor little guy, he is fighting hard!!!

He really is a handsome guy!!!!!! I sure hope he's getting better. I've been keeping up with your thread and hoping for a happy ending. Jann
 
Thanks Jann! Him and I are trying hard. Watched closely by my wife and my 3.5 year-old daughter that is not that thrilled that Dad doesn't let her "play" also!
 
Hermie came from a small privately owned (not chain) pet store in the saline area. i forget what it is called now. They seemed to take good care of their chams (always had fresh fruits and veggies in their cages with their crickets at any rat). I got him SUPER small (less than 4 inches long) which may have been a mistake.

With herm we didn't check his blood work until after he'd already been on meds for his "MBD" (antibiotics and painkillers) ... so we werent' sure if the drugs nuked his kidneys, he was having infections or they were in failure. The fact that he is still alive and kicking now points away from kidney failure. But who knows.

Updates...

Izzy has not been a happy cham since 2/3 days ago... By that, I mean I have been catching him with his eyes closed during the day quite a bit.

When I handle him for his meds and soaking shower, he seems okay.

My opinion is that he is bored in the tub and probably zonned out by all the medicine every day. Along with added stress from being handled waay too much for his standards.

Some of the meds still have few more days until the 14 and 21 days duration...

We will keep plugging along!!

(I know Juli had a total different issue than I but losing her Carla is a shot in the hart no matter what!!)

More updates...

No news is good news, or is it?

(One good news was to see that Fred is on his way to get healthier!!)

Well, here on this front, Izzy is still about the same. Taking his meds and moping around the tub.

He doesn't look any better or worst. Is this about the same for others that are treating their chams? Are you also seeing that they tend to not move as much due to all medication?

Like before, we will keep fighting and plugging away!!

Broken Bones...

Status quo for the time...

Question: Can anyone tell me about how long does it take for the bones to heal?

I don't want to take his splits off too soon. The next vet visit is in less than two weeks and xrays will probably tell more...

Just wondering.

I would just be patient. 2 weeks isn't that long. A person is in a cast from 6-8 weeks, can't hurry the bones mending.
 
On another note, it is going to be three days that he is not eating... no crickets and no silkies.

Should I get a food supplement to add to one of his meds shot in case he goes on without food for a while?

If so, which one? Reptaid?
