Very shy and stressed

I know. I don't support them selling these guys at all but as I said I only bought her so she wouldn't die. Or get sold to someone who has no idea about chameleons. My question is if peta knows how bad it is and has done investigations why have they not done anything to stop it.

I commend your heart being in the right place, but to Petco (or who ever) they just see the dollars you just dropped. I'm very emotional about seeing these poor little guys at the pet store, so I'm not trying to be insensitive to your feelings and reasons when I say the best thing would have been to let her stay at the pet store - even if it meant her death. :( (I hate saying that, sorry)

Peta can only bring this to light, they are not funded by the same kind of money that these large corporations have. It's all about paperwork and red tape. I'm not a Peta fan either, but they documented this well. There are a lot of such documents if you search you tube. There are video's showing the poor treatment of animals at these places. Doesn't seem to matter if it's Petco or Petsmart or Pet-whatever, they all seem to fall into the same category of not knowing how to care for these animals and over simplifying the required care and husbandry needed tor a healthy animal. They sold you as sick animal, that should have never been on display to begin with. The damage is done, I really hope she gets better, but for everyone who thinks this is the way to stop this the stores from selling, I believe you are wrong. They don't care.

Ya I know what you mean and I agree 100%. I never once thought that it would stop them from selling them. I thought about it a lot. I was going to leave her there. But even if I did she would die or get sold to someone that can't take care of herand they would get another one. I know that's not an argument but I just couldn't stop thinking about her. Guess I need to avoid those stores lol.

Seems why I'm grounded from even going in there? I can't take it and I fold and my heart breaks. On the rarecessed occasion I run outta bugs, I have a friend pop in and get some there for me lol

Peta or the Human Society can only expose the cruelty, then it's up to the consumer to boycott and the USDA to inspect and fine when regulations are not followed. You think that's bad, look up factory farms and where your meat comes from

Update on melon: so I have made some progress with melon. She has started to become a little more comfortable with me everyday. She doesn't run and hide evrrytime I go to see her now. I added a bunch more fake plants to her cage a couple weeks ago to make her more comfortable. She used to be dark all the time except when she was sleeping but since I put more plants in she is usually a nice bright green. She is looking better everyday. She eat and drinks. She had her first shed since I got her and her colour seemed to be brighter after. But on the weekend I had to clean her cage to get all her shed skin and poop out. Well she did not like that at all. I had to take a couple of the fake plants out and wash the shed skin off the quickly them out hem back in. Well she got all pissed and even tried to bite me but she hit the plant instead. So now when I go near her cage she gets scared and thinks I'm gunna mess with her house. I feel like I took a bit of a step backwards. But I'm sure in time she will realize again that I bring her food. She still won't take anything from my hand but she's warming up slowly.

So ever since I got Lennon (my male Ambilobe blue bar x ambanja panther chameleon) in feburary I would find myself at petsmart getting random little things for him. Every time I would go there I would see this poor little female veiled chameleon. It is no secret that most people on this forum do not support petsmart / petco selling chams Including myself. But I found myself thinking about that poor girl being so stressed from so many people walking by and staring at her all day. Not to mention the poor conditions she was being kept in. Yesterday I went to petsmart to get a fish tank because I am gunna get a few African dwarf frogs. So I went to see the chameleon and she has hardly grown in the month or so I have seen her there. She went and hid as soon as she seen me. So I bought my fish tank and supplies and left. While I was setting up my tank I couldn't stop thinking about her so when I was done I went back to ask some questions about her. There was about 15 - 20 people standing in that little area looking at the hamsters and lizards when I got there. So the chameleon was hiding from everyone. The store employee I talked to was holding a snake when I got there. I asked about the chameleon and she didn't even want to touch it but she is the only one in the store that will touch it. As I said she was holding a big snake and didn't wanna touch a tiny chameleon! I asked how old she is and they said a couple months. Probably closer to 4 or 5 months. I asked a few more questions and decided I couldn't leave her there to die from stress and improper feeding/ supplements. That is the only reason I bought her. The store employee even told me she doesn't think they should be selling certain animals because "petsmart" doesn't know how to take care of them. So I brought her home and put her in my spare cage. I have all 4 sides of this cage covered with black garbage bags while she settles in because I have her in a area I walk through quite often. I have been monitoring the temps and humidity closely to make she it doesn't get to high. She is scared of people that when ever I go look at her she goes and hides in her plant. She still has shed skin stuck to her from her last shed (probably because her himididty was only 40%) but thankfully none around her eyes, feet or tail just small pieces on her sides. So over the next few weeks I will leave her be and only disturb her for misting and to put food in the cage. She only weighs 16.6 grams. It will be a long road to get her to trust me if she ever does. Anyways. Sorry for the book. I just want to introduce everyone to Melon. View attachment 180555

Had to get that pic quick before she went and hid again.
You're a hero man! Glad you did what had to be done.

I am really glad you rescued her from that living hell. Poor girl looks so bad. :( but now she is in good hands.

Personally, there isnt any petco or petsmart in my country and I am just happy

My veiled is from PetSmart too. In all honesty, he has always been healthy and was well fed when I bought him. He did have a feisty little attitude though. So far he is doing quite well in my care and has even begun to trust me more. I pretty much have to keep using these store because it's where I buy my feeders and other supplies. Melon looked underfed and that's scary, glad she is okay

Your lucky. It really depends on the store employees and weather they are willing to learn about how to take care of these animals. When I bought melon the girl was trying but she clearly didn't know much about them. She tried to tell me they live 25 years. And that melon would be mean forever. Well I can see why she was mean from the way she was handled/ cared for. I know she probably will never really be to friendly with me but I just give her space and let her do her thing. She was defffinitly underfed but she eats like a little piggie now lol.

You will be surprised. If you have the time like I do--thank God-- you can make them less scared.... Just work with her, you might be surprised at what happens to her attitude

usually i go to petsmart cause the crickets are healthier there. but ususally the chameleons are bought fast. i never see the same chameleon twice. and usually their babys. (2 months max) and i hate to see that there is substrate and even a log-hide. they are not Turtles!

I am slowly working with her I just don't want to stress her out to much that's why I let her be most of the time. But after cleaning her cage on the weekend she is more scared of me again. Just giving her time to relax before I put my hands in there to much again.
