Very tame chameleon

Hey all,

Does anyone have a particularly tame cham? My Cameo has been handled daily since I got him 3 months ago and has never hissed or shown distress, in fact its the opposite, anyone can handle him but if he sees me he will immediately try to get to me, my wife loves holding him and he even comes out while shedding skin to rub against her hand and get help from her! Its like he actually has a proper personality even though he is a reptile does anyone have any vids of loving behavior or just plain old relaxed and comfortable vids, I'm just finding it strange as I had a chameleon when I was younger and like a lot of people say on here she hated everything and so did the male I had next lol. Its now to the point where my wife passed him to me the other day and he just walked to my hand and as I was carrying him to his viv he spread across my hand and decided to relieve himself vids or pics would be nice to see, thanks people

Welcome to the forums. My chameleon's are always like that. It's so nice to have friendly chameleons.

Just be carful not to pick at the skin. It will damage there scales if it's picked off to early.

Yh we knew not to pull at it but thanks for the heads up, we wait until he is really flaking unless he comes out for a scratch early, we make sure its all on his terms

I have a video of little hunter, my 4 month old ambilobe coming to my hand to be taken to his free range but I can't seem to get it to upload. Here is a picture of him, he is really sweet and has never hissed or puffed up at me.

My two female veiled chameleons are both hissers and puffers lol. If I need to get them out, I try to come up from the bottom. After I scoop them up, they calm down and even enjoy going outside. Its the initial getting them out that is the problem. They have no problem coming out of the cage and even onto my arm if they see crickets!

Not to be a downer, but animals will often calm down in periods of extreme stress. It's not uncommon for animals to be their best behaved while terrified. Also do not assist with shedding, leave them be. My Chams always try to climb on me, but it's more of an extension to their territory to explore, they do not have the ability to see you as anything more than an instrument to get where/what they want.

here are a few pics of Cameo, I've had him since he was 6 weeks and he is now coming up 5 months, he has had 3 skin sheds and is about to get a new cage as I want to put only live plantation in, some of the set ups I've seen are awesome, I'm still misting by hand but its not been a problem yet and he likes to drink from a medicine syringe too so gets plenty of water

Agree for the most part but I think they can recognize that you are more than just a thing to get them from point a to be. When my chameleon and even my beardies seemed stress by something (cars, planes, other humans etc.) they all walk back towards me and stay near me until whatever it is passed by. I'm not saying that they consider you their long lost parent or something, and this is always a debate; but I think they have the ability to form types of bonds with people.

They see you as a security blanket I guess. It's like a reptile retreating to a hiding place, it associates you with safety. Which is a good thing for sure. Kind of like us running into our house to get out of a storm. We like our houses(mostly) and feel secure in them, but we don't really have social bonds with our houses.

Eh you could kind of have a social bond with your home. It's where you hold good or bad memories at. Where you know you can relax and rest easy at, where you can always have food/water. Like whenever you move, at least for me I'm always like "aww peace out house where this memory or that memory happened, I can't believe I'll never do blank in you again."
Also they always perk up more of I've been away a long while and come back or react more over me than the other people in my house even though they like everyone else. I'm sure they're not thinking "oh come give me kisses" but they definitely trust me more and I personally call that sort of trust a social bond.

@CharlieCharmingo I'm sorry but I think we're just comparing 2 different ideas of what a social bond is. You are not a part of your chameleons social life, they do not have them. Millions of years of evolution has made sure of that. That said, I agree with you that you can be seen as a security blanket, but they do not like or love you. You're speaking out of speculation, but this a fact, these animals are not tegus and monitors and a lot of animals can avoid stress if we'd make that more clear. I'm not saying you're stressing your cham, you sound like a good keeper, but it's a misunderstanding of how these animals operate. They like when we provide them with something beneficial, but they don't care about us. BtW I enjoy the friendly arguments/discussions lol so don't take this the wrong way please! I speak my mind, but dont mean to offend. I just think it's a mistake to imply to newcomers that these creatures will be our friends and enjoy our company.

I fully get what you're saying and by no means am I suggesting that they actually have feelings, I'm merely asking if anyone had witnessed behaviors that ate not normally associated with chams or reptiles in general, I wouldn't take offense as I'm just like you in that respect
