We shouldnt have chams!?

Banning reptiles because of people getting sick would be like banning bicycles because people who were not wearing helmets were getting injured. Wash your hands, you'll be fine. Wear a helmet, you'll be safer.

Right, wear your helmet because we didn't & we all died from bike accidents when we were kids
;)

I think it is funny how those articles always fail to go on to explain how dogs and cats can also transmit salmonella to us, as can pet birds and fish. Plus dogs and cats have some other nasties we can catch from them in addition to the salmonella.

People watch dogs sniffing each others butts and licking themselves and eating poop off the lawn, etc, and then let the dog lick their face. If that isn't a great way to catch salmonella or other parasites I don't know what is.

LOL

Ditto! Then we can stand there, with chams on our shoulders and heads, and laugh at the people on the ground!

Together my friends, we can take over the world!! We can start a new breed of humans whom have independent eye's, color changing capabilities, and abnormally long accurate tongue's capable of snagging a cheeseburger from 5 feet away. Rise of the Salmonellian's.:p

Don't really understand what point you're trying to make. In a biking accident at speed, there is a high chance the bike smacks you in the head, not to mention you smashing your head on the pavement. I would not be alive today if I had not worn a helmet while riding. Take it from someone who has been hit by a car and had his bike hit him in the head (helmet) many times.

Yes I'm a mountain biker but my worst accident occured when I was young and just riding a regular bike on the sidewalk. Don't be stupid, wear a helmet.

They're saying everyone died as kids.

I wash my hands before and after handling my chams. Just force of habit. I do it with my dog and my cat too. (only the after part though)
i just found it funny that the article said dont have pet lizards.
Its not that you cant have them, its that you need to own them responsibly. meaning if you are sick, or immuno suppressed, maybe you shouldnt handle them. Otherwise, wash your hands, keep the cages clean, use good reputable insect breeders, and ta da, no one will get sick.
its called being a responsible pet owner.

thats one of the main reasons i breed my own crickets as they are usually malnurished, dehydraited, and most likley have been gutloading off their own dead..i regularly clean the bottom of my free range with a lil tilex, windex, and then warm soapy water(also i take their tree outside once a month a clean it off..although they are pretty good about not hitting the tree, they drop the terds on the tiles)..ive always thought about it..but its really just for dirty a$$ people that never clean their reptiles or themselfs..and also children, and old farts are the most subseptible..like others have said..just wash yer damned hands!!:D

So... wear a helmet when handling your chameleons....LOL

And remember, guns don't kill , reptiles do!!! j/k

yeah i was a skateboarder for 14 years..never wore a helmet once ( if your one of those clumbsy a$$ people that fall on your head, ied say you probably werent meant for extreme sports..LMAO)

p.s. ive also totalled an rf600r streetbike on the free way, was cut off, still never touched my head on the ground, not a single scratch on my helmet... :D

but i DO wash my hands after plying with my lizards :)

Meh. Now I'm sounding like a nagging father. It's just crazy how quickly concrete and gravity can rearrange your face. I guess people don't learn until it happens to them. Not my hospital bill.

But back to chameleons, I feel (imo) that they are less prone to harboring Salmonella than terrestrial reptiles. Again, opinion NOT fact. Any thoughts on this?

Heh, clearly you've never been mountain biking before :p

I havent actually crashed anything (well i have, 3 cars, one was a truck I flipped upside, but not the point) but concrete can rearrange a face pretty uncomfortably. I fell when i was 12 off my bike, and smashed my forehead on the concrete sidewalk..... needless to say... some 20 stitches later and ruined glasses and shirt.... not including all the towels i used to stop the blood (man head wounds bleed alot) I am respectful of helmets ( i wasnt wearing one.. i was a kid.. i know horrible, i do now though)

and as for chams... I think you are right. I think they are cleaner lizards than some that i have seen, simply because they dont wander around in their own feces (like iguanas do bc they dont climb). JMO

That would be awesome!

Well the article did include big cats.. does that count? lol. Gee I wonder how lions and tigers could be hazardous to my health...

I think wearing a helmet when handling chams is appropriate... lol. though i do think chams should wear helmets when we handle them... since they seem to enjoy suicide jumps from 5 feet in the air. (at least my guy does)

and didnt you see godzilla? he was a reptile who killed people. or anaconda.. or croc attack... lol!

Heh, clearly you've never been mountain biking before :p

ya..not quite my thing..speedo's are not a good look for me..also ied rather be knee dragging canyon twisties at 160 rather than going maybe 60 down the biggest hill you can find..then when you crash all you do is pick cactus out of your sack..LOL:D

In my province More people are harmed by dogs alone than by all the pet lizards and snakes and amphibians COMBINED. Horses kill or harm more people than the reptiles too.

I believe humans are responsible for more illness and death to other humans than any other animal around.

So I guess I'd be safest living alone far away from everything except my pet reptiles and amphibians!

Wash your hands is the best advise you can get. And not just after handling your chameleon either - but also after touching money, bank machines, door knobs, escaltor rails, etc etc etc

Ugh, I never wear lycra. That stuff is nasty. To each his own..I'd rather be hitting berms, drops, jumps and rock gardens. Flat ground is boring.

Of all the chameleons and other reptiles I had necropsied or tested for infections over the years only one ever had salmonella show up in it.

HAHAHAHA totally true...now if i could just strap my 1000cc motor to your cannondale (or whatever frame you ride) that would be fun!!!!ied even wear the lycra!! LOL :D:D
