I am soon getting a 3.5 month old nosy be very soon, and i was wondering what type of feeder i should invest in breeding: Goliath Hornworms, Silkworms, or Butter Worms?

Thanks,
Kai

Out of the 3 I'd say Silkworms.

I've never done it, but there are a lot of resources out there on how to do it.

Good Luck!

I second the silkworms and yes there are alot of "how to" websites and they seem easy enough. I've got a couple of worms that have cocooned and going to hatch soon.

I still dont undestand how to contain the tiny silkies. Arent they small enough to fit through fine fiberglass or aluminum screen/mesh?

If you can get them you should think about indian walking sticks (chams love these)

stick bugs are excellent feeders! You can easily buy ova in bulk off ebay. As long as you keep them for feeders and not planning on letting them go in your backyard, I see no harm. Just don't go around selling them!

Silkworms aren't worth breeding unless you have white mulberry leaves on hand year round. Mulberrychow doesn't do the job as well as the white mulberry leaf.

I would buy silkworm eggs in bulk, you can get them CHEAP if you buy them in bulk. I am planning on buying them in bulk soon! Let me know if you want to go in on a deal, I might get 100,000 eggs or more. :D

I finally decided to make a room dedicated to silkworms.

(I have found it impossible to keep them healthy in a room with other insects) I've had the grassi infection hit my colonies numerous times, and its going to an end now that I am giving them their own room! LOL

WHOAH!!! you better start charging those worms some rent:)

I have a question if you dont mind, do the silkworms only eat white mulberry leaves?? I thought they will eat it as long as its a mulberry leaf:confused:

Actually, i looked them up and i dont think they're meaty enough. I dont have a food source for them either, i'll stick to worms, I HATE CRICKETS though.

indian walking sticks eat bramble, bouganevilla, & oak

they are a great treat and make alot of babies

your cham will truly appreciate it

I have owned huge tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, lizards, crocodillians frogs, you name it, ive at least handled one or owned one. But a roach is the 1 thing in this world that can scare me up onto my counter. Crickets, i dont rally find horrible, their just really stinky and nasty.

woww..really? you need to get over that phobia then broseph..lol.. roaches are AMAZING when you are low on doe.

Invest and go to arronpaul.com and buy 5,000 small nymphs, you get each 1,000 for 75 bucks which kicks ass.

In 9 months you will have so many adults that you can sell them and make your money back and have TONS of babies for the future.

You simply need to stick your hand in a bucket of roaches, they tickle you, in a creepy way, only at first though ;) lol

Think of them as BIG rollie pollies...

Just got about 500 dubia roaches yesterday. They're not disgusting at all in my opinion. At the moment, I have a bearded dragon that's 14" long & I'm tired of buying & keeping crickets. He eats A LOT! After doing a lot of reading, they seem like the way to go as far as breeding feeders. Virtually no smell, they're horrible climbers, reproduce fast, make no noise & the meat to exoskeleton ratio is high. My beardie loves them, but he'll have to stay on crix for a bit until the colony establishes.

I'm planning on getting a panther chameleon in a couple of months after the dubia colony gets good & established. Was wondering about the panther's affinity for dubia roaches? I've read that some people say the panther's are more of "worm" eaters. Does anyone have a dubia colony that is the main staple of your panther chameleons?

I imagine if they get started on them at an early age, they're more likely to feed on them with no issues.

Mine will eat them, but he prefers crickets or supers. Given the choice of any common feeder worm, crickets, and dubia, he'd save the dubia for last.

i dont think that butterworms can be bred. From what i understand is that they come are imported from chile (i think) and they are zapped with a low level radiation to get rid of any bacteria on them and that also makes it so they cant reproduce. i dont know for sure but i read that somewhere.
