Where would I look for Walking Sticks?

Hey guys so I live in Arizona and walking sticks are native here. I want to catch some and get a colony going, which could prove hard as the type that is local is not A sexual. Any idea where I can catch these little buggers?

It might be easier to buy some. There is a member here that raises and sells walking sticks, and other unusual feeders. His name is Nick Barta.

I'd say go for it and save yourself some money! Just do a Google search and some research for when they're most active. That would be pretty neat to start your own colony. I do believe most people feed theirs blackberry leaves. Not sure if there's any in AZ. I'm sure they feed on something over there as well.

Ya I seen that and would love to. The issue is the ones Nick Barta sells are not native to the US and are extremely illegal here in the states.

Indian stick insects are the one type I think aren't illegal in the US, Nick sells those.

I know he does, which I find strange because they are 110% illegal that is the main one that is deemed illegal and the reason that walking sticks at all are illegal.

A long time ago, Indian walking sticks got over here. They then began to alter themselves to live here in the US this bred a new variety of walking sticks. Close to the Indian but not the same.

Any walking stick that is not native is illegal to posses in the US without a permit (for educational reasons only afaik). All walking sticks are illegal to sell, in any way. To transport, ship, sell a walking stick of any kind in the US is illegal.

I was raised in Az. and remember catching walking sticks there. I think they eat rose bushes there. They're also nocturnal, time to get the flashlight out.

Walking sticks that eat rose bushes will also eat blackberry leaves and most likely evergreen oak

Here in europe im feedjng them mostly on ivy. Thats where i find them on and they seem to eat very well

Well that explains why I rarely see them lol. What sucks even more is I dont think ours are asexual. I did see and catch to show my daughter a leaf bug (like a stick bug but looks like a leaf). Didnt keep it though darnit.

Nick is a rebel then, The Pablo Escobar of the insect game... But seriously I doubt that Mr. Barta would be selling these insects if they could get him in any trouble

He sure is :).

Honestly he may not know, he may have gotten 1 and let it have babies. From someone that is less than honest with him.

Or maybe the laws have changed (doubtful) Here is the thing he is already the rebel no one else in the US sells them anywhere. there has been reports of Aphis raiding peoples houses seizing and exterminating all the bugs and dolling out some hefty fines.

They are A sexual, and can devastate local plant life if even 1 gets out.

Laws are needed to protect people from their own stupidity. If people could be trusted to be responsible and not release or allow non native species to get into the wild, we'd have fewer problems.
The facts are that the most injurious species that caused problems by being introduced were often done by the government. Killer bees, cane toads, kudzu, chestnut blight.....all perpetrated by the government "experts".
The sticks, legal or not, pose no danger in areas that see any regular frost. They aren't prone to wiping out native vegetation, because they are fairly selective feeders and because they are not a species that wouldn't be subject to predation by birds, other insects, and the like, just as the native sticks are not over running the place.
Be a law abiding citizen if you'd like, but do know that lots and lots of laws are based on propaganda, have little usefulness (CITES sounds like a great idea, but it doesn't help a species to be protected from trade, if destruction of its habitats for timber, grazing, agriculture, human development, or mining is allowed to go unchecked or Chinese folk medicine is still claiming lives in the millions) and is just another case of a government telling you they know what's best for everyone and everything, while they themselves perpetrate all sorts of environmental maladies.

Oh I 110% agree, I just dont want Aphis breaking down my door and taking all my animals :). I have read some horror stories where they has happened.

Nicks been around the block I would say... He has an in depth knowledge of the subject, as a matter of fact you can check him out on @DeremensisBlue blue pod cast speaking on th subject. The chameleon podcast it's called in case anyone hasn't already subscribed. @nick barta raises and sells feeder insects not found in most feeder shop, websites, etc..not to get off the subject

I am well aware of who nick is. Maybe he just feels like Extension does, also nick doesn't sell anything that you can not get anywhere else. aside from Stick bugs and Katydids. He does also sell Roaches, Mantids, and stuff sure but all that stuff can be purchased in other places. Stick bugs and katydids can not.

Or be advertising them on CF:cautious: Isn't Nick Bartas business based in the U.S.?

Yes it is,

However a misnomer to this whole thing is he may require you to have a permit to purchase them. As you can own them, IF you have a permit that is usually only granted to education professionals.

Again this is all assuming the laws have not changed. They may have, but I highly doubt it, as again they do not need to breed to have babies and can destroy local plants, fairly quickly. There has been issues in some places in the US of this exact thing happening.

This site is recent and says the laws are still very much in tact.

If this is wrong or there is a loop hole nick would care to share that would be awesome. I would love to just buy some self reproducing ones from nick vs catching the native ones that need a male and female.

I'm not sure that I understand what you want my friend? We where just letting you know that you can buy the sticks from Nick Barta when he has them available, where not trying to argue whether or not it's legal illegal or what not, you asked, we answered, that's what this forum is for. Not a big deal.
