jst a quick Q to ask about a white crust on a baby veiled chameleon's nostrel..

he has a confimed RI. and is on antibiotics...

is this white crust around the nose all the crap coming out as a crust out from his nose?? or is this nothing to do with the RI?? and its just common on all chams?

any thoughts would be great

cheers

This is usually associated with too much supplementation. Chams excrete excess salt, etc, via the nostrils which is seen as the white crust. It is not uncommon. How often do you supplement and what with? The insects should only be dusted very lightly - if they look like ghosts, then you've overdone it.

However, I have never experienced a cham with a URI so I don't know if they do this as part of the infection too, like when we have a cold our nose runs. Someone else may have the answer to that part for you.

he recieves between 7 to 10 crickets a day all dusted..yeh they look like ghost :S

wat are the reprecutions of over supplementing if any?? can it block the nose of a baby cham and force him to breath through his mouth????

i shall reduced the amount of calcium dust i am using..

thanks

I think that they do a kind of snort thing to get the stuff out of the nostrils - I certainly saw Lily do this on more than one occasion. I put a tiny, tiny amount of supplement (just on the tip of a plastic teaspoon), into a sandwich bag, add the required amount of feeders and shake the bag gently to give them a very light dusting.

clea has it on the tip of her mouth and it got lighter. It is like an inch long. Is your chams having problems in the nostrils are around the mouth? If in the nostrils you can spray some water around her nostril NOT IN and it should go away. Last week Clea had the same problem and its gone now. Sorry if this doesnt help

I would not recommend spraying water around baby chameleon's nostril as the water droplet may be enough to cover the holes and asphyxiate him.

Ashrules, on top of the oversupplementing, are you using tap water? or water that has been conditioned with something like reptisafe?

Over supplementation can be hard for your chameleon's kidney and liver.
Especially when it deals with vitamin A and D3.
If this continues, his organs will shut down and eventually cause a quite painful death.

Whats up with the questions of blocking your chameleon's nose?

every1s read it wrong....

is it possible that the crust around the nose could block the baby chams nose....making it open its mouth to breathe easier?

as mine has this crust and has its mouth open most of the time atm..

just wondered if that was possible..

im not a cruel person u know.lol

Yes I suppose its possible, though its likely to exhibit signs such as scraping/rubbing its nose on branches, perhaps pawing at its nose with a hind food etc.
So you'd probly notice something was wrong before it got to that stage.
It is a natural function, so its not likely to happen. The respitory issue is more likely to cause it odd behaviours including breathing by mouth (mouth constantly open).
Many lizards, including chameleons, will gape if they get too hot also, so keep this in your mental notebook for future refrence.
Hope its RI responds well to treatment as quickly as possible.
best wishes :)
