Who else is keeping their chams free range?

I don't know who told you they wander. Mine never wander.

In the winter they tend to stay and their trees and sulk. Some keep within their trees and some do wander depending on age. The older the get they less they do it.

I want to do some sort of free range set up in my room so bad! I am just worried my mom wont always remember to keep my door closed. We have a cat, a terrier and a lab.

I can not wait to freerange my ambilobe. he's only 4 months, I'm going to wait until he's 9 months. Then he won't see cage anymore unless I'm going to feed him flies...
Keep the pics coming, very interesting the way everyone solves the problem differently of making a living space for a chameleon.

Yes, cup feed. Below are a couple of Luie & Camille's indoor trees.

Jan, what kind of lamps are you using in the UVB fixture?

UVB is at its weakest near the end of the tubes.... You might want to just get two smaller fixtures, one for each tree? Just an idea. I remember seeing posts where you take your chams outside a lot... so they might not need the 'fake' UVB as much.

Ok, there is no reason why Free Range cannot be done with the Majority of Chameleon species. Those here that do it, speek highly of the success in it. But it does depend on your circumstances and personal household situations.
I create beautiful, attractive free range setups for most my larger Chameleons, which when set up properly, you dont have to worry about them leaving the area. Cause they are so happy being right there in your setup.
I have never actually ever witnessed my Panther Chams leaving the beauty I've provided them. Fischers seem to be wanderers but know the whole area so well, they get back to, and sleep in the EXACT same spot when they return each night, (somthing I have not seen in other Species Except Mellers, Parsons, and the one "Willis" Cham I had once.(sold to me as a Fischers)
A well set up Free Range, can not only be very appealing and comfortable for your Cham, but also can be very enjoyable and pleasing to you, your eye and household, but also your guests!

I do not recommend Free Range to owners that have other pets such as cats & dogs etc. With that said Free Range setups can also "Be Free" but still contained to areas if you know what your doing. :) :D

This is VERY critical!

I will stand by this for as long as I keep chameleons.... I will never keep a cat or any predator (natural or not) of chameleons as long as I have chameleons in my home. I do not trust any cat to not play with, nibble or eat a chameleon, ever.

If you have a cat, I would not consider a free range.

I was thinking about "freeroaming" my new Fischer's Cham within a floor to ceiling "cage" that is just an area walled off in a room with a sheet of plexi and a screen door. There is a redfoot tortoise taking up the floor but all this wonderful vertical space. I was going to set up large plants in a big cement mixing tub up on the shelf that is about 2 feet above the redfoot. There is even a window in there for him to look out. BUT I just read where someone said that the Fischer's are wanderers so perhaps not a good idea. I thought if I set it up correctly he would stay up and away from the redfoot but perhaps not. I can't have him down there with the redfoot for obvious reasons.

Maybe building a separate screen enclosure in there would be better. More of a pain but better for the cham?

Thanks
Carole

Kevin; Thank you so much for your concerns. I have 2 Reptisun 5.0 uvb's over those 2 trees. My guys do get natural sun just about everyday. I did put their trees a tad bit closer and I just got the solarmeter from Gary and will keep a close eye on it. Right now it's at 32 and 33. Jann

I think I might be able to free range now since I have a swamp cooler in my room. The roaming would be a problem though, since I have a lot of crevices they can sneak off into.
