why isnt my veiled brown?

Hi,
My Cham is the same although he shows some patterns of different greans and a few brown lines etc but never turns fully brown like i hear others do.

Phil

some wont turn completely dark until really provoked, or really stressed, i only saw my last male do it once and he was over a year old when he did.

Most people's veiled chameleons aren't brown. It isn't at all unusual to have a green veiled chameleon. Or any shade of turquoise, orange, and even some reds sometimes, if you get a FL veiled.

My cham is always brown and only turns green when he sleeps. Sometimes when he eats he turns a little more green, but always brown. When I first got him he was green a lot more. He has been in his screened cage for 10 days. He was in the glass one for one day, and was green more often in that one. That was the first day I had him. Is he still adjusting, or do I need to be adjusting something in his enclosure?

What are your temps?

This is what I noticed in my chams:

When he's sunning, one side (the one facing the sun) would be brown to dark brown (almost blackish) & the other side is green.

Before he sheds, he turns a dull color brown & some greens.

When he's cold, usually in the morning, he turns brown then lightens up when he's warm enough.

When he's too hot, he'll lighten up & when he's sleeping.

The temp is around 80 and then a little warmer in his basking area. We mist him about 4-5 times a day, then his temp goes down to 70ish at night. And he was sleeping in one of the lower plants.... where it is cooler? But now he is back up really high to sleep and he is sleeping in his basking area, lights off of course.

Also, when veileds are under stress (ie: being moved from enclosure to enclosure) they will brown out for a while. But yeah, answer Mika's questions and maybe we can help you better.

My veiled is almost always green. He only shows other colors when he's upset & even then he shows dark green spots & stripes, but never brown.

Some members here say their chams are always brown and it's normal.

I've never seen any of my chams brown all the time though.

How warm is warm? When you say around 80, is it the lower 80's? The higher 80's? And that's the ambient temp right? So the basking spot temp is 90's?

How old is he again? Can you post pics of you new setup?

I know you changed it but you just posted one of him on a plant last time.

One of my chams sleep near the top of the pot & the other sleeps underneath the hanging pot. LOL..

But what I noticed is when they're sleeping & I disturb them at night, they will change their sleeping spot or if let's say they get light at that area when they're sleeping, it bothers them & they change their sleeping spot.

ok it is not letting put the pic, but his temp is 82 and then goes up to about 92-94 in the afternoon sun. He is estimated to be about three months old. I will try to add the pic a few more times, and then try again tomorrow.

What is 82? His body temp? The basking spot?

When you say it goes up to 92-94 in the afternoon sun, what does that mean?

Is his enclosure in front of the window (without the glass) and you still have the basking bulb on?

Or is this the temperature of his basking spot under the sun?

Yeah, like Mika said, is that 94 in the ENTIRE CAGE? If so, that is not good. He is cooking. You need to move that cage.

The ambient temp in his enclosure is 82. He is in front of a window but the glass is closed. The sun shines on him in the afternoon and the temp goes up to 92-94. I turn off his basking lamp at that time since he moves away to be in the natural light. Then he eats dinner and goes to sleep. That is his routine.

Also he has a cieling fan in the room with him to help circulate the air. The outside temps here get into the 120's in the summer. So I will move him away from the window soon anyways. I was just going for the natural light vs. the artificial light when I could.

He is in front of a window but the glass is closed.

Sunning him that way won't do him any good because UVB doesn't pass thru glass. You have to open it.

He needs a breath of fresh air.

No bulb will ever beat the benefit of good ol sunshine but you need to open the windows, there should be no glass blocking the rays of the sun.
