You said your hex tank is 4 feet long....do you mean tall? What is the other measurement of it?
It should be fine for your male to be in as long as there is no glass or plastic between the UVB light. The main thing is to get them separated before the stress kills one of them. If your female is gravid and ready to lay the eggs, this may be playing a part in her not laying them too IMHO.

its a 55 gal tank one side is flat and the other side is a hexigon so i wouldnt even be able to tip it i think my best bet it to get the plastic what do you guys think?
