Thought I'd share these, over the last week I travelled to a small town in Mpumalanga, South Africa to photograph Bradypodion transvaalense insitu. You'll notice they differ from the majority of the
transvaalense that many of you have seen or keep.

Young female:

Young Male:

This particular population is known for the red tails:

Adult Male.

Myself with Adult Male, note the habitat isn't quite what the literature tells you.

Great photos once again!! Very interesting seeing the area of capture in the last photo. What was the temperature like that day?

As always, thanks for sharing!

Thanks, the nights were cold roughly 9/10 degree's celsius, the daytime temps were warm with mid twenties (celcius) bare in mind it is the middle of Winter here in South Africa.

Great pictures! Thanks for posting! It is always neat to listen to accounts of people that can actually locate chameleons species in the field. What other species of Bradypodion have you located in South Africa?

Best Regards

Thanks Jeremy, here is my current list

Bradypodion taeniabronchum should be on this list after my next major field trip in August.
Bradypodion occidentale is a common species on the West coast which is on the opposite side of the country so I've not attempted looking just yet.
Bradypodion ngomense and Bradypodion nemorale occour in two isolated pockets of forests in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, the area is remote and unfortunately not very safe. But the poachers have already been there and this is why these species are in over sea's collections sadly.

Bradypodion kentanicum occours nearby Bradypodion caffer and to be honest I've never ever thought about looking for them as yet.

Glad you enjoyed the post.

You can see all of the images of the species I've found in South Africa here: http://www.tyroneping.co.za/chameleons/

Hey Tyrone,

Awesome pictures as usual. Thanks for sharing,

You know you can get B. occidentale in the Cape Town area, right? Still not close to you, but if you want info, let me know and I can give you some details. Also, would you mind sharing details about why the area around B. ngomeense and B. nemorale habitat is unsafe? Would be interested in hearing more about the situation there.

Best,

Chris

Thanks Chris, I will drop you a PM.

The extreme Northern area's where B. ngomeense and B. nemorale are located are quite rural and relatively far from a major centre and I've heard some negative stories from people who have tried to venture up that side especially looking for the animals at night. But as is with most area's where Bradypodion are.
