I would get varying sizes. It's good for their lil feet to have different sizes to "work out" on. You can use zip-ties, hot glue or a ploy-ling.

I was thinking the same thing Max, get different sizes so their feet don't loose there flexibility! That's the same train of thought for bird owners also..

or you can try bamboo , our local pet shop has it in packages of 4 feet long, and about 30 per pkg ~ vering widths ( mostly med and thick) for $5 - I am sure other stores will have it too- just be sure to wash it off

I dont have anything on mine as far as paint/waterproofing- but I did notice they were a little slick in a few spots, I put tons of vines , so she uses them more like a step then a perch - the vines go mostly up and down, the bamboo sideways - and it has a huge umb/ plant in there also - so she has lots to walk on - but GURR- lol she still only uses the first about 10 in of her cage, and never goes lower than that - she has a 18X18X36

Dowels sound like a pretty good idea, my boy free ranges the entire house and has a lot of things to climb on a huge tree in the sun room to get in, but I'm getting a new cage for him and thinking the dowels may be the way to go.....we live in a very wooded area and have a huge array of trees to cut off limbs and I'm thinking that with the dowels and limbs he could have a really nice new cage.

I use lot of dowels and tie them together with butcher string. I make a jungle gym or a ladder that will fit in their enclosure from top to bottom. I am making a new one today I will snap a shoot for ya when I get done with it

Alright here is some pictures of what I do with dowel rods and putting them in my enclosures.
Like I said I use butcher string at the cross points and it holds pretty well.

I’ve just bought the ones that are available at Lowe’s. No idea what type of wood they are, but they worked just fine.

Nope, used them just the way they came. I didn’t use them for more than a few months though. It was just until I stopped caring what my neighbor’s would think of me for scavenging their tree trimmings.

FWIW, I'm using a combination of ½" dowels (hardwood—probably birch—from Home Despot), bamboo, and PVC coated garden stakes. Now that I think about it, PVC pipe (1" and smaller) might work as well, but I haven't tried it for that purpose. I seal the dowels w/ a few coats of polyurethane. Tied together with zip-ties.
