World, Meet Proteus

I hate how my mind and emotions work hand in hand at punishing myself. This baby relied on me and even after all the research I did, I still found a way to screw something up. I just feel terrible beyond words but I am thankful he survived. It certainly could have been so much worse.
How human:love: !!. Yes it could have . Your a great Cham mommy ,you did not have a Crystal ball . This was a terrible accident . You will need to be strong and not beat your self up . Your baby is going to need you to be your best for his care .

Loki will either go back to the shelter (which kills me because I love him and he came from an abusive situation) or he will have claw covers on all the time as well as kept in our bedroom with us at night or anytime he is not supervised around the viv, once it is repaired.
He was being a kitten :( . You know you can provide a good home to both . They just can't be together .

Thank you, all, for the love and support you have shown. This has been awful and I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. We are on our way to pick him up and everything sounds like it will be okay. I might invest in a few cham bodyguards and barbed wire lol. If anything, I truly hope my situation can help someone else. I will post an update once we get him.

Oh my gosh! I am so sorry that this happened. For all of you. I was afraid to read the post after you told what happened because I thought it would be bad news. SO GLAD to hear he's gonna be OK! With all the care you guys put in to building his enclosure and getting every thing prepared before you got him, there's no way your a bad cham keeper. It was just a very unfortunate accident. Nothing more. You can't blame the cat for being a cat. They like to hunt and they can't help it. Perhaps you can put a coated chicken wire underneath the regular screen to offer "Laoch" a little more protection. I will try and learn from your experience and I will watch my rather obnoxious dog like a Hawk after my boy comes home in Oct. Best of luck to you and your boy.

Just a warning, the picture is tough to look at. The vet said that even though he looks rough, the prognosis is good. He was given an antibiotic injection and we need to keep a close watch on him. We are headed home to give him a warm misting and try to give him a cricket or two while in his carrier. We were told we could call anytime and this vet is open 7 days a week so that's a blessing. Now, we watch and try to get our poor little guy back to health. Seeing him like this kills me ugh

Praying the baby will make a full recovery . Hang in there .

Thank you. The staff were wonderful and just love him. His sutures look good, Laoch (I truly love that name now) is just exhausted and I believe he is thirsty so we will get him home and as comfortable as possible. Maybe tomorrow a little time in his carrier out in the direct sunshine will help him feel better as well.

He is in my lap and he just did his first poop! It looks great and healthy, too. He is moving around in his carrier. He has his mouth open so I think he is really thirsty and hungry. Watching him moving around is making me feel SO much better. I doubt he got much (if any) sleep last night so I think some misting, a bite to eat, and some much needed rest will do a world of difference. He will get some true sun time in the morning since it will be in the 70's here. Oh, he is giving me so much hope he will pull thru this like a champ! Thank you for the thoughts, prayers and energies too ♡

Perhaps you could try dripping some water on his nose to entice him to drink a little if he doesn't want to lick the leaves.

He just took 3 drops from a little syringe. He also had a small but white urate so things are definitely looking up. We were going to offer him a cricket or two but it took so much energy just to get him to drink that we decided to wait until morning. The temp outside is 83 and it is 66% humidity so he is resting in the setting sunlight outside for a bit. He is opening one of his eyes.
We found out one of his lungs was punctured but wasn't bad enough to warrant sutures on the lung. It should heal on its own but we will be back at the vet for a follow up in a week, or sooner if needed. I must say, his vet bill was less than $150 which really surprised me. I was ready to pay $300. Anything to save him!

Sometimes he takes a deep breath and opens his mouth to do it but I am sure it is very painful to do so through his nostrils. I gently hand misted him and he raised his head into the mist. Now, we are going to keep him in his carrier but place him inside his carrier back in his fixed (and rigged) viv for the night. At least we will be here the next two days to watch him around the clock.

Happy you could keep him drinking . That's so important right now . Please keep us updated .

It's pretty brutal looking at those little guys, knowing or feeling you could have done better. Keep your chin up, we all have lessons to be learned, many of them the hard way. Wish you and the little guy the best.

With a broken heart, I have to let you all know that proteus, aka laoch, did not survive the night. It was all too much trauma for his little body.

I am so devestated. Repticon is in town and my husband wants to go but I just can't. He was just a baby. He deserved a better life.
I won't give up and my husband @J.Bauer is going to make some changes to the cage. Proteus has been placed to rest in a beautiful park by a stream next to our beloved guinea pig who passed from old age.

We talked about it and might go to Repticon tomorrow. He is modifying the cage up and Loki has claw covers. I know we did everything we could to save him. I know it was all just a horrible accident. We had already called the shelter to take Loki back but it was too much. I couldn't do it. So, we are making changes not just for our next Cham baby, but for Loki as well. We made a promise to these babies and I will make sure we keep it. I have to look past my heartbreak which is hard to do at this moment.
